SLAPSTICON Returns!!!!!!!!

PostMon May 28, 2012 1:35 am

Hey Gang,

We broke the news at my Charley Chase show at Cinevent recently, so I thought I’d better let you know here and now the big story:

SLAPSTICON returns in 2013 at its new venue in the University Theatre at Indiana University in Bloomington, June 27-30, 2013!

This is VERY recent news, and we’ll be updating the website and posting Hotel Reservation Information, Programming Information, and all sorts of other goodies as soon as possible. But start planning next Summers Festival Season with Slapsticon now. The University Theater at IU is a fabulous place to watch movies, and the Campus and Hotel at IU’s Student Union will be very nice and hospitable places to stay up and discuss Billy Franey and Milburn Morante into the wee hours. Hope to see you there.

Much More to Come, stay tuned!

That's excellent news. Glad to see central-Ohio-Indiana remaining the silent movie festival capitol of the world, showing those upstarts from Italy and upstate New York.

I was very excited to hear this was going to be the venue -- Indiana University spent a lot of money a year or two ago to provide a first-class cinema for the community with the best equipment and an excellent programmer. I'm going out there in November and I'm very excited to see what they're doing there. You can go to their website at http://www.cinema.indiana.edu/about/ and see what I'm talking about.

"UPSTART"? My good man, I'll have you know that Groucho Marx slapped Louis Calhern in the face with a glove for being called that!

Gee. And some New Yorkers would slap your face for calling them Upstate. :D

Sorry, Gerry, but never let the truth get in the way of a good joke...

IU Bloomington is also the home of David Bradley's massive film collection since his death.

And a goodly portion of the Orson Welles papers. I read his screenplay for Heart of Darkness at IU's Lilly Library, and looked at some of his correspondence, too.

IU Bloomington is a very nice campus, and I should know: I finished my undergrad degree there, and also earned my MLS at the Library School. I lived in Bloomington for several years, and liked it. From what I've heard the IU cinema is a good one, but I never set foot in it, mainly because they hadn't built it yet. But I do know that the Student Union is enormous, like a castle.

I believe they have Lassie's papers as well.

You're a wonderful audience! G'night, everybody!

I hate to be the acid tongue here, but this is just basic science. Alkali Ike would be all over those Lassie documents.

Here's some info and a look at the University Theater at Indiana University. I think you're all going to like this place:

http://www.cinema.indiana.edu/about/

And the website for the Biddle Hotel at IU's Student Union, just a very short and pleasant jaunt to and from the theater:

It's an extraordinary venue. Who knows what the future holds, given economic times, but IMO kudos to the Slapsticon staff for Breaking Away and Going Hoosiers to a well-researched/assessed decision.
