Rags and Riches: The Mary Pickford Collection

PostThu Jul 05, 2012 10:21 am

Several lifetimes in the making, Milestone now has an official release date for the Blu-Ray and DVD releases of RAGS AND RICHES: THE MARY PICKFORD COLLECTION. It is now set to be released on November 6, 2012 to coincide with the release by the University of Kentucky Press and Library of Congress' MARY PICKFORD: QUEEN OF THE MOVIES edited by Christel Schmidt.

Can't wait that long? Well, so I don't have to be chased by maddened film collectors across the ice floes of the Hackensack River (though, fact being, it's 100+ degrees and my running days are over)...

For members of the Milestone newsletter and Nitratevillians, you can get it now! Our copies are in and you can go to http://milestonefilms.com/products/rags-and-riches-the-mary-pickford-collection and order a DVD or Blu-Ray set for 20% off the list price.

For those too young to remember when we first announced this, RAGS AND RICHES: THE MARY PICKFORD COLLECTION consists of POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL, THE HOODLUM and SPARROWS on a 3-disc set.

Disc 1. The Poor Little Rich Girl. 1917. 75 mins. Director: Maurice Tourneur. Music composed and conducted by Philip Carli, performed by the Flower City Society Orchestra. Also: commentary by film historian Scott Eyman and a home movie from Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbank’s legendary Hollywood home, Pickfair.
Disc 2. The Hoodlum. 1919. 92 mins. Director: Sidney A. Franklin. Orchestral Score by Bonnie Ruth Janofsky, performed by the Rouse Philharmonic, conducted by Hugh Munro Neely. Also: Mary Pickford in Ramona (1910. 17 mins.)
Disc 3. Sparrows. 1926. 90 mins. Director: William Beaudine. Score by Jeffrey Silverman, performed by the Rouse Philharmonic, conducted by Hugh Munro Neely. Restored by the Library of Congress. Also, an original 1926 trailer, the “Angel” outtakes, a video interview with Mary Louise Miller's daughter Louise Paziak, and commentary by film historians Jeffrey Vance and Tony Maietta.

Happy viewing!

Dennis, you are GOD. Not only are you giving us privileged early access, but a sizable discount as well! Just ordered the Blu-ray, and threw in a Prince Achmed for good measure. Praise be to our beloved Milestone, and now let's CUT TO THE CHASE!!!

Just got my Blu-ray order in (though on dialup it took awhile). I'd expected these films to be released as individual discs in a series, priced at maybe $20-30 each. A three-disc set at a net of $36 with shipping puts them at only $12 per movie, a genuine Blu-ray bargain! Can't wait to watch them on my big screen! Thanks, Dennis & Amy! Keep up the great work!

It looks like I got the discount along with a "friends of Milestone" early shipment, and I assume it will ship sometime within the following week.

Very excited to get this and am happy it is finally available.

This is really a tremendous deal! Been looking forward to it for months. Looking back (and ahead), it's been a great year for silent film on blu and dvd. In addition to Rags and Riches, we've had Wings, more KINO Buster blus, Loves of a Pharoah, 4 new Lon Chaney films and Show People from Warner Archive, Spiders from KINO and the upcoming rerelease of Slapstick Encyclopedia, The Gold Rush and Lonesome (finally!!!) from Criterion, plus some I'm sure I'm missing. Sure, there are many I'd still love to see get released but I'm thankful to Milestone and the rest for the great stuff they've put out.

I'm sure I should have ordered blu-ray, but I'm thrilled to have the standard DVDs winging their way to me now. Thanks Dennis for the discount and the long awaited Mary Pickfords!

Yes! Amy and I spent the day shipping discs and taking care of our dog. Thank you all for such a wonderful response! For those who are attending the SF Silent Film Festival, check out their program for a Milestone ad with the release date for CUT TO THE CHASE. And I will tease you with this for you guys teasin' me :D

As for the quality of the Pickford collection, I've stated before what I thought -- the Pickford Institute and the Foundation made sure they used the best 35mm restored material in terms of SPARROWS (the LoC) and THE HOODLUM (the Academy) and their own best 35mm material on POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL (with Philip Carli's assistance on the latter). They then did really nice 1080i transfers with beautiful tinting. I might have done some Dust/Scratch removal but that said, the DVDs and Blu-Ray "LOOK" like film rather than plasticized spotless digital which I truly hate in many restorations. And the kid-friendly intros are for a younger set than my 16-year-old so I can't judge them. The two commentary tracks (Scott Eyman on PLRG and Vance and Maietta on SPARROWS) are also very, very good.

But without reservation, I can say the three features are wonderful films and the really excellent orchestral scores sets them up as among the best of any of the releases this year.

I ordered a copy also. I'm curious how I can prove I met the conditions, though I did leave the newsletter box checked during checkout.

Super excited for these as I have never seen ANY of them.

I'm not even a Pickford fan and I still jumped on this one. Also got Electric Edwardians while I was at it. Milestone is a great resource; thanks, Dennis, for all you do.

I too got overly excited and accidentally ordered the DVD format instead of the Blu ray but I just let Amy know and I'm switching the sets once I receive it. I'm still excited!

How do I get the 20% off BD and early delivery? I put it in my cart (along w/ a separate DVD) and the price stayed normal, and there wasn't a way to click/show I was a Nitrateville member. Thanks in advance.

The price is already 20% off on the website -- the list prices are $39.95 for BluRay and $34.95 for DVD. And as for proving your a Nitrateville member, we sent emails to our newsletter subscribers, but we didn't announce the availability anywhere else on the internet. Or in other words, we'll sell to anybody who wants to watch Mary Pickford films -- if you share our excitement over her work, you're immediately friends of ours. :D

And as for ordering BluRay or DVD -- our new website platform doesn't really make it clear how to switch ordering formats. So I've now put instructions over the ordering button to make sure people don't make this mistake again.
