MEDIA RELEASE
2012
In 2012 Australia’s Silent Film Festival will present over 25 sessions of restored silent classics. In the first half of the year Sydney audiences were astonished at the talents on display in works from such giants of early cinema as Gance, Lubitsch and Lang. A week ago Festival events in Newcastle and earlier at Sutherland drew the largest audiences ever in the history of the Festival. A sizeable sprinkling of the attendees was made up of teenagers and university students eager to see masterworks of early cinema presented with accompaniment by accomplished musicians sensitive to the nuances and potential of early cinema..
Over coming months the Festival shall present many delightful sessions including:
• Silents Are Golden: Chaplin, Keaton, Bevan and Chomon.
• Kings of Comedy: Chaplin, Chase, Bowers and Chomon
• The Phantom of the Opera
• A Trip to the Moon (1902) in colour and the Extraordinary Voyage
• Blackmail
• Laughter and thrills for the young at heart: Chaplin, Chase and Keaton
• Silent Comedies? Priceless: Chaplin, Keaton, Arbuckle and Hairbreadth Harry
• The Clinging Vine
• Steamboat Bill Jr.
• The Lodger
• Short Films of 1912: 100 Years Young!
• The Battle of the Somme
• Georges Méliès: First Wizard of Cinema
The Festival is enhanced by the talents of its musicians: Sharolyn Kimmorley AM, Mauro Colombis, John D’Arcy, David Bailey, Greg Smith and Cliff Bingham.
