PostFri Aug 03, 2012 12:28 pm

Don't know if this has been mentioned around here but Milestone is releasing CUT TO THE CHASE - The Charley Chase Collection, a DVD of his silent comedies November 6, 2012.

:o It's been mentioned, but I think this is the first time we had a street date. Which one of the Chase Two-reelers had Olive Borden as his leading lady in it? Anyone know off hand?

Any chance Milestone will offer another early bird offer on their website for this one like they did for Mary Pickford?

How much overlap with the two Chase DVD's from Kino a few years back?

The Milestone set contains six films not previously released in either Becoming Charley Chase or the two volumes of Chase shorts from Kino:

WHAT PRICE GOOFY (1925)
MAMA BEHAVE (1926)
BE YOUR AGE (1926)
CARETAKER'S DAUGHTER (1925)
THE UNEASY THREE (1925)
CHARLEY MY BOY (1926)

As for the rest of the set, let's hope for improved transfers, and we'll have more musical scores to choose from.

The following Chase shorts have been released in other comps:

FORGOTTEN SWEETIES (1927) American Slapstick Vol. 1
FLUTTERING HEARTS (1926) Slapstick Encyclopedia
TELL 'EM NOTHING (1926) Famous Comedy Legends Vol. 2
WHISPERING WHOOPEE (1930) Laurel And Hardy And Friends
ON THE WRONG TREK (1936) Kinowelt L&H Collection Vol. 24, Lost Films Of L&H Vol. 4, UK L&H Collection Vol. 13

If only applicable rights could be cleared so that the Chase silents still MIA could be released, including the ones that only surfaced on German DVDs. A complete Chase box with every extant silent would be heaven. Oh what the hell, throw in the talkie shorts too.

You're kidding. Limousine Love? One of the two Holy Grails of my silent comedy search? Finally to be made available on something other than a wildly overpriced Laurel and Hardy set filled with other stuff that I already have?

Next you'll be claiming there's an Easter egg in the set that plays A Pair of Tights...

Methinks you misunderstood...I didn't claim it was in the set; the list of films released on other comps consists of films that are ONLY released on those other comps, and are NOT included in Becoming Charley Chase, Cut To The Chase, or the two Kino Chase volumes. So, LIMOUSINE LOVE will have to remain on your Silent Comedy Holy Grails list. Luckily, I managed to snag a copy of that Kinowelt DVD for peanuts.

We need a set of Chase's copyrighted silents, dammit.

The MGM released Chases belong to RHI. Until they license someone to release a set like they did with L&H and OG, we won't see it. And the chance of seeing a comprehensive box set of all the silent Chases is nil.

Yes, I know all that, but I can still dream my little dreamy dreams...

Yep, and here's the one with LIMOUSINE LOVE:

Looks like they're damn cheap now too; Mr. Roots, it might be time to add LIMOUSINE LOVE to your collection.

I purchased the entire line of Laurel and Hardy Kinolwelt DVDs when they first came out and glad I did even though now we have Laurel and Hardy on Region 1 in an excellent set.

Any one who is eager to see some rare silent shorts included on these discs, the prices are much lower now than when I first got them.

Another good one is the ZENOBIA Kinowelt DVD, it inculdes Mabel Normand's THE NICKEL HOPPER as one of the bonus shorts and is very funny.

Here's the earlier release I got:

I tried ordering the Zenobia DVD from Amazon's German site and it says it can't be sent to me. Don't know whether this is a territorial thing or a shipping thing, but it won't let me buy it.

That's stinky! I didn't order my Kinowelt DVDs from Amazon I did it from a private scource I forget the site name, something like www.dreidreizen. Can't remember it's been years!

I really lucked out, a co-worker at the time went to visit family in Germany and brought back a huge shopping bag loaded with Kinowelt Laurel and Hardy DVDs (of course I paid for them). Got so many, even ended up with extra copies I don't know what to do with now!

Have you tried Ebay of another seller for ZENOBIA?

Not yet, but I've never had any trouble ordering any DVDs from Europe on Amazon. Wonder if this is something new?

The Mary Pickford set comes in Blu-ray. Will Charley be available in Blu-ray too?

Can't wait to receive this new set.

I'm guessing not, but perhaps if we grovel hard enough...

Oh my good Mr. Doros, might a Cut To The Chase Blu-ray set be within the realm of distinct possibility?
