Farewell to The Bioscope

PostThu Aug 16, 2012 2:42 pm

Doggone. Mr. Urbanora's swan song post.
http://thebioscope.net/2012/08/16/the-846th-opinion/" target="_blank

I will miss The Bioscope. I've been reading it (I think) since its inception; I checked the site nearly every day, and reading each new post was always a treat. I learned good stuff from it. Five years is a long time to keep feeding the always- hungry yawning maw that is a blogsite, especially one as erudite as The Bioscope, so I don't blame Mr. Urbanora for wanting to move on to other things. But still...darn.

Oh, damn it - I echo everything Frederica said, including the fact that, as a fellow silent film blogger, I know it can sometimes be arduous to spend your free time finding new things to say. I'm glad that what has been written will be staying online, because it is indeed a very good resource.

I've just posted a thank you note to Luke on the Bioscope and came here to notify people of the sad fact.

Bugger. Mr Urbanora has many spinning plates on the go, so I'm not entirely surprised.....IIRC he has mooted the idea of stopping before......but for those of us who rely on his posts for the insight and information within......it's a sad day.
I could use some digital restoration myself...

Sad sad sad. It shows how we have to appreciate good things while we have them. I'll be rereading lots of items.

Yes to all the above comments. I always assume such blogs will continue ad finium, but it's essentially a gift while they are here.

Thank you all for your kind comments, here and on The Bioscope's final post itself. Blogs can't last forever, and as I say in my final Bioscope comment, the thing to do is to look on the Bioscope as a work that is now completed. I began writing it in February 2007; 1,380 posts later (not far off a million words!) in August 2012 I came to the end. So it is now turning from blog to archive, and I hope that in this form it will continue to be useful to people for a little while yet.

And I'm not abandoning silent films, so you'll see me around.

Best wishes

Luke

Always considered it a top-notch resource, indeed a model for how to do something like that with erudition and passion. Good luck on future endeavors and glad to hear you will still be involved with the silents.

Double Doggone. I clicked on Fred's link, and my anti-virus software (BitDefender) is blocking it on the grounds that the site "contains malware." Has some evil genius taken advantage of Mr. Urbanora's absence and infected his blog?

I'm not getting that message, and I also tried it with the Google Chrome
browser, which is very sensitive to those things.

I'm no sure how many know, but there is a free program called httrack, which
can copy websites to your hard drive, and which you can then backup to
CD, DVD, thumbdrive, etc. It's helpful because as you know, once on the
web doesn't mean always on the web. In fact, I imagine that Nitrateville
itself could be backed-up by such a program.

Short answer, no. The Bioscope is a Wordpress-hosted site, and should be as secure as they come. I've tested it today on a number of PCs and virus checkers and come up with nothing. I think it impossible that there could be any malware lurking on The Bioscope, though do let me know if you see any such thing again. The site may not longer active, but that doesn't mean I'm not looking after it.

Thanks for all your efforts, I certainly will miss the regular updates also.

As someone who kept a website going for ten years, with some interest but also with profound local indifference from those who should have cared, I do understand that sometimes, something has to give.

All the best with your other ventures.

NitrateVille is regularly backed up.

Always a terrific read, Luke, and thank you for early words of encouragement when NitrateVille started that still turn up highly in search results :)
