Critic's Choice seemed to have been tied up with or owned by DeepDiscountDVD. That said there was often major price discrepancies between the two in the websites. That was also when DeepDiscount operated their CD area as a separate business and would not combine the orders to one order for cheaper delivery on an International basis. This changed when they became DeepDiscount.com and then they were taken over later by a competitor from California.

It's still odd that they would have issued an unauthorized (pirated?) VHS of MGM's Brown of Harvard.

I am sure that the version on vhs would not sync up with the MOVIETONE (VITAPHONE?) track. Anyone know if there is stuff in the LASER DISC/DVD-R version that is not in the old vhs version? Hmmmmm....

If I recall correctly, the VHS tape was the restored Davis version and the LD (which I own) is the Movietone which though pretty good, is somewhat "rougher" in picture quality. Though I haven't seen the Davis version in quite awhile, I wouldn't doubt that it is slightly more complete but not by much.

would Griffith's ONE EXCITING NIGHT be one of the Critic's Choice? VHS of course. why would there be a problem of rereleasing all on dvd?

:o Interesting. So what about LILAC TIME? Also put out by Critics Choice, and likewise technically owned by Warner's. Awhile back you said they were considering THE PATENT LEATHER KID.

The PATENT LEATHER KID would make a great dvd release along with another Richard Barthelmess release THE DROP KICK. But the PLK is around 12 reels long, my goodness? I know boxing movies were popular in '27 ie ROUGH HOUSE ROSIE, ONE ROUND HOGAN etc.

Warners still has some great stuff never released. For instance THE FIRE BRIGADE(1927) and THE FLAMING FOREST(1926)..

Going back to Paramount with their recent restoration of Wings, how bout them doing the same for THE COVERED WAGON(1923) or OLD IRONSIDES(1926), both looked fantastic on VHS back in the day when they were released during the time of Paramount's 75th anniversary 1987?

Yes but The Patent Leather Kid is more of a war movie than a sports film. It runs a little over 2 hours.

Saw Patent Leather Kid at Cinecon a few years ago. I was underwhelmed.

So, I just received my copy of SHOW PEOPLE in the mail today. Never have seen it, bought it on the high reputation it has here and elsewhere and am looking forward to watching it. Also received TELL IT TO THE MARINES. Have really grown to like Lon Chaney, so am looking forward to that one too. Glad I got a long weekend ahead of me. :D

I disagree. It was mostly a boxing movie, with 20 minutes of a war film on the end. The war sequence was the best part of the movie. The film was too long. It needed some tighter editing in the first half.

The war segment is more important than the boxing part.

I watched SHOW PEOPLE last night, it's really funny! Marion Davies was a hoot! The film has some damage and jumps to it, but still very watchable.

Hearst refused to have Marion take a pie in the face and compromised with seltzer water but oddly allowed "Marion" to ride a giant pig....

I thought that was done by a stunt person, She sure wasn't on a pig in the close up.

Hate to hear this, as I find boxing a bodaciously big bore. The PLK poster emblazoned with tanks, along with a cast which includes several tankers, cruelly mislead me. Might as well out myself...I'm "that way" about tanks, especially the archaic Great War variety. (For this reason, Sahara is far & away my favorite WW II picture.)
