The Navigator on Blu-Ray 9/4

PostFri Jun 22, 2012 9:51 am

The description courtesy of amazon.com:
Brilliantly exemplifying Buster Keaton's ability to mime rich humor from the inanimate, The Navigator is a classic of the Golden Age of Comedy, centered on and about a single extraordinary prop: an immense five hundred-foot yacht.

In a return to the ''pampered youth'' role he had played in The Saphead (and would return to in Battling Butler), Keaton stars as Rollo Treadway, an inexperienced lad of extraordinary wealth -- and surprisingly little common sense -- who finds himself adrift on ''The Navigator'' with no one else on board except an equally naive girl (Kathryn McGuire). After discovering each other's presence in an ingenious ballet of unintentional hide-and-seek, the couple resourcefully fashion a home for themselves aboard the derelict boat, in spite of their unfamiliarity with the tools of domesticity.

They then embark on a series of misadventures on the ocean floor (where Rollo in a diving suit must parry the attacks of an aggressive swordfish) and upon the high seas, surrounded by a fleet of menacing cannibals, where the film reaches its explosively funny climax, with the aid of a crate of rocket flares. Beatifully remastered from new HD material.

BONUS FEATURES: ''The Navigator'' short subject documentary, Audio Commentary (TBD), Trailers, and more features to be announced.

This sounds very promising. Does a trailer for The Navigator still survive? In his autobiography, Keaton talked about a gag that he cut from the film because it got in way of the plot, but he left it in the trailer. Also, is it true that there is a small amount of footage missing from the current DVD?

There might be. A while back, I posted at Nitrateville the following quote from Bruce Jensen from an old alt.movies.silent newsgroup post:

Bruce Jensen wrote:This scene is not missing, exactly, but some frames are missing that make clear why Rollo winds up on the wrong ship with his ladyfriend. The shot, which I have seen just once in a theatrical showing, occurs as Rollo is approaching the gate for the ship he intends to board. My precise recollection is a little shaky - but here goes...the Navigator, the spy ship, is docked at gate 12; the cruise ship Rollo wants to board is at Gate 2. Just before Rollo arrives, there is a shot of gate with the number "2" beside it, suggesting that this is the gate Rollo will want to enter in his vehicle - and that's what he does. Right after he enters, the gate is slipped aside by a dockworker, showing that the actual number is Gate "12", and explaining why Rollo winds up on the wrong ship.

And, I got the following reply from a poster named JM:

JM wrote:The current Kino DVD shows somewhat the opposite of the action described in your quoted text. It shows a long shot of Gate 12 and we see the dockworker rolling the gate and covering the "1" - so the gag is there regarding Rollo mistakenly boarding the wrong ship. However, there is then an abrupt cut to Rollo boarding the ship, so maybe there is a fragment missing of the car pulling through the gate and the action that you described.

So, who knows...? It's been many years since I last watched this film; guess I'll have to pull it out again and check out this specific scene.

Right now, the Keaton films that really need to be completely overhauled and fixed up are HARD LUCK and DAYDREAMS. Those poor films are still pretty fractured on DVD/Blu-ray, missing various bits of extant footage.

For more on extant Keaton footage that is still MIA on various home video versions, see this excellent page:

http://rjbuffalo.com/missing_buster.html

Now I'll be five behind in ungotten Keaton Blus; I still need to pick up STEAMBOAT BILL JR., SEVEN CHANCES, GO WEST/BATTLING BUTLER and LOST KEATON.

Thanks for the reply! I thought it was a situation similar to the footage missing from the original DVD of Sherlock Jr., but I see that it is not so clear cut in this case.
It would be nice to see more complete versions of Hard Luck and Daydreams available on blu ray, but I sadly don't see that happening any time soon though. I would love to be wrong though. I'm wondering if Kino will be tackling the Arbuckle/Keaton shorts sometime in the future. If the DVDs they did about ten years ago are any indication, I would imagine that a few of the shorts (like The Cook and His Wedding Night) won't be included, but at least Moonshine would be complete (albeit from a poor 16mm source).

MOONSHINE needs to be restored using all the existing good-quality 35mm footage shown in "The Best Arbuckle Keaton Collection" with the rest from the 16mm print shown in the Kino DVD.

Oops, I forgot, THE SAPHEAD is also out. Damn, I'll be SIX Keaton Blus behind...

One of my favorite Keatons, as my user name hints at. This would be a must in any case, but it's especially exciting if they have indeed located that trailer with the deleted scene.

Who's doing the music? Rodney? Robert? Others?

Very good, the film seems to be in the best of hands.

A nice extra feature would be the 1913 recording of "Asleep in the Deep" by Wilfred Glenn, which plays an important part in the "scary night" sequence.

Now officially announced on the Kino webpage.

http://www.kinolorber.com/news.php?news_id=143

The Navigator comes to Blu-ray and DVD on September 4th, with a SRP of $34.95 for the Blu-ray and $29.95 for the DVD edition. Both are currently available for prebook.
(...) and audio of a 1913 recording of "Asleep in the Deep", a popular song of the period referenced in the film.

Well, I'm almost tempted to take "credit" for that particular bonus feature  , having suggested it two years ago:

Anyway, looking forward to the refurbished exploits of the one and only Rollo Treadway.
