Has anyone seen One Romantic Night? Is it any good?

I don't think I've seen much of Gish's immediate post-silent era work, just later titles like Night of the Hunter and Portrait of Jennie, and I'm curious about this one.

It's of interest to Gish fans, and has its moments, but is overall a bit stodgy and rather disappointing. Still worth seeing once. The print I saw was only so-so, and I don't know if it's ever gotten a restoration.

One Romantic Night has it's moments, mostly in the later part of the film. Gish speaks well but the part doesn't make her very interesting. If you're familiar with the silent version (The Swan) there's quite a bit of plot difference.

SPOILER ALERT:

Conrad Nagel plays his usual stalwart romantic type against Rod LaRocque who comes off as a bit of a cad. Tables turn when Nagel finds out that if he marries Gish she'll be cut off with no title- and no money. At that point he starts looking for a way out and LaRocque becomes funny in an ironic sort of way- and Gish sees that he's rather more interesting than Nagel.

Nothing new here. One Romantic Night stinks. Gish hated it.

This would have been a perfect night for the TCM premiere of Annie Laurie. Library of Congress has a beautiful 2-color preservation print. MGM has the rights. Ah, more's the pity.

Rob,
From your mouth to TCM's ear!

I don't recall any big premieres in the August Silents Unde the Stars, except for a few rarities in 2010 on Thelma Todd Day.

I think the SUTS is a ploy for them to get some vacation time for their employees by putting the station on Auto-pilot ( well that , and Oscar month).

At least we have the wonderful Mack Sennett shorts to look forward to in September, but yes, it would have been nice to have new Gish! I was also hoping that they would work "The Whales of August" in ( which I have never seen).

Griffith gave us ONE EXCITING NIGHT, but in 1930 the most Lillian could offer was ONE ROMANTIC NIGHT., .....

Lillian is not well cast, and not very effective, but everywhere you look there is someone in the supporting cast to raise one's smile - Conrad Nagel, Rod LaRoque, Marie Dressler, and even dear old O.P. Heggie.

I wish they were running one of my favorite Lillian Gish talkies, HIS DOUBLE LIFE (1933) with Roland Young.

You're right, they don't tend to have very many TCM premieres in August, but there'll be one I'm looking forward to this August: On the 10th will be the TCM premiere of the 1933 MGM feature NIGHT FLIGHT.

Also, it still remains to be seen at this point, from different versions of the August schedule that I've seen, whether or not the two rare Columbia Freddie Bartholomew features NAVAL ACADEMY (1941) and JUNIOR ARMY (1942) will actually be shown, or replaced due to unavailability of broadcast material (as they've frustratingly done before!)

I'll certainly have to set my DVR/DVD Recorder! The funny thing is, the one I'm most interested in seeing is Night of the Hunter. I'm almost ashamed I've never seen it!

My grandmother was a HUGE Robert Mitchum fan. She even corresponded with his wife or brother if I'm remembering the story correctly. She had pictures of him prominently displayed as if he was a family member. :)

I'll definitely have to try and record The Wind. I have a copy that is sourced from the Laserdisc but I would like to get another copy of it in case I ever want to loan it out to people because I feel it's a film that most people should watch. Ending be damned, it's one of my favorite silent films of all time!

I saw it and didn't have a problem with it. Gish is somewhat a bit like a deer in the headlights as it is her first talkie. Her costar Rod La Rocque actually comes off better and more confident as he had already appeared in several sound films. The overriding problem with this film is that the story had just been made as a 1925 silent by Paramount called "The Swan". Once again it was one of those Euro themed costume films (taken from a Broadway play) that Hollywood seemed to snap the rights up to as soon as the play opened. There's nothing wrong with a remake, just that some early talkies were remakes of silents produced too recently for the public to have new interest.

:? This seems to be a month long tribute to Mack Sennett. Many of these films are TCM Premieres. Great to see MICKEY on the schedule, but will this be the restored version? Anyone know?
