Organist Dezső d’Antalffy

PostMon Sep 19, 2011 3:48 pm

I got this request in my email yesterday,

We would like to ask for your help in the following issue.

On behalf of Krisztina Aczélné Taubinger, the only legal successor of the organist, Dezső d’Antalffy (Nagybecskerek, Hungary, 1885 – Denville, USA 1945), I am asking you to let me know if you have any of the manuscripts, list of notes, music notes or recorded music by d’Antalffy. In case of a positive answer, I would like to ask you to share them with me.

Antalffy’s only daughter, Judit d’Antalffy died on the 4th of February, 2011, thus the legal successor is Krisztina Aczélné Taubinger, her only daughter, who wishes to make the works of d’Antalffy available for the public. She is working on finding the works of d’Antalffy in order to give them to the research library of the Hungarian Music Academy, so that artists who are able and willing to interpret them could reach them.

D’Antalffy was living in America from 1925, and due to his illness and the world war, he could not come back to Hungary, even if that was one of his wishes. That’s the reason why nothing else but his personal mails with his family survived in Hungary, besides the material compiled by his fellow composers.

According to our knowledge, there are some works in America that have no copies available in our research library. That’s why we are asking for your help.

As for me, Dénes Kapitány, the organist of the Abbey in Zirc, Hungary, I admire the works of d’Antalffy, and I would like to compile an anthology of his works in the framework of the series of Hungarian composers.

As the material of inheritance is unfortunately not complete (there are manuscripts lent, lost and misappropriated) we would like you to inform us about the works of d’Altalffy. For the sake of easier identification, please, send us a list of works that shows what instrument the given piece was composed for, and whether it is a manuscript or published music.

In 1921, he travelled to the United States for a concert tour. He also worked as an organist at the Capitol Theatre, New York City. From 1923 until 1926, he was conductor and composer for Max Reinhardt’s company of theatrical productions, including “The Miracle” (1924). Is there any recordings of it available?

S. L. “Roxy” Rothapfel hired d’Antalffy in 1927 as one of three organists for the opening of the Roxy Theatre in New York. Do you think the Capitol and the Roxy Theatre has a sound archive?

In 1932, d’Antalffy became staff composer and organist for the Radio City Music Hall. He wrote “Dedication” to a poem by Martha Wilchinski for dedication of the Music Hall on December 27, 1932. He also wrote an oratorio, “The Voice of Millions”, for the broadcast dedication of Rockefeller Center in 1932. Other compositions, such as his operetta, “Onteora’s Bride,” were performed in the Music Hall. He also played in Carnegie Hall as the organist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

Could you please send us a CD copy of the following works?
- The Miracle (1924)
- Dedication
- The Voice of Millions
- Onteora’s Bride

Is there any sound archive of d’Antalffy playing the organ or accompanying silent films by the organ?
