Mary Pickford The Muse of the Movies - Documentary

PostThu Dec 10, 2009 11:21 am

Thanks to a fellow DoN, I was able to view the 2008 documentary film Mary Pickford: the Muse of the Movies (time stamped DVD-R) and I wanted to encourage anyone who has a chance to see it, not to miss it. Stills images and footage are used to great effect with Mary Pickford's audio interviews relating her life story and bringing it to life. I know this played at the Kansas Silent Film Fest last year, it's worth checking out.

here's the URL to the website: http://marypickfordthemuse.com/

I thouroughly enjoyed it and hope to get a chance to see if on the big screen, too.

It plays well on the big screen, I saw in here in LA this fall. It was touching to hear Mary talk of her feelings around events and describe things that happened, but she played down certain elements, and the film got its math wrong a few times.

Well, some things did jump around a bit, too. Is it a surprise she played down some things and they played with kid gloves? I'm not too surprised simply because they did rely on Mary's narration for the framework of the documentary.

I agree, it was very touching to hear Mary talk about things. It was a real treat, actually. And interesting to see adopted daughter Roxanne.

I really enjoyed it at the KSFF. The only thing that bothered me about it was that it really glossed over her alcoholism in her later years. Besides that, I highly recommend it.

A lot of her movies are posted online, I think they are legal.
