Dick Hyman & Judy Hyman Concert plus Ithaca Silent Film Screening
Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 8:00pm to 10:00pm

Barnes Hall, Auditorium 129 Ho Plaza Cornell University: Ithaca, NY 14853, USA

Photo of Dick Hyman & Judy Hyman Concert plus Ithaca Silent Film Screening Emmy award–winning pianist, music director, and composer Dick Hyman and his daughter, the Emmy award–winning violinist and composer Judy Hyman, will perform an album-release concert on Tuesday, October 9th at 8 pm at Barnes Hall on the Cornell campus in Ithaca, New York.

The concert will feature the father and daughter playing pieces from "Late Last Summer," their first-ever album together, recorded in Ithaca late last summer.

Rounding out the evening concert, Dick and Judy will honor the centennial of filmmaking in Ithaca by performing live accompaniment to a screening of an episode of "Beatrice Fairfax," a silent film made in Ithaca almost 100 years ago.

A musician’s musician, Dick Hyman is a celebrated pianist, organist, arranger, music director, and composer. Named this year by National Public Radio as “a living, breathing, swinging encyclopedia of jazz,” Dick has recorded over 100 albums under his own name and has performed on countless others. Dick embarked on his career in the late 1940s, freelancing in New York City’s booming music scene. At the opening of the famed Birdland jazz club in 1949, he played with both Lester Young, the reigning swing saxophonist, and Max Kaminsky’s Dixielanders.

During his long career, Dick Hyman has accompanied or arranged music for Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Bette Midler, Johnny Mathis, Frankie Avalon, Aretha Franklin, and on one remarkable occasion, Igor Stravinsky.

Dick Hyman’s film scoring accomplishments include two Emmy awards for original score and musical direction. He has served as composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for twelve Woody Allen films, including Zelig, Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose, and Stardust Memories, and he scored the Oscar-winning film Moonstruck.

Judy Hyman, an Emmy award–winning musician and composer like her father, has toured and recorded as a founding member of the genre-defying band The Horse Flies and also with Natalie Merchant. She has appeared on MTV, A Prairie Home Companion, All Things Considered, e-Town, and Late Night with David Letterman. Judy has composed music for feature films, documentaries, and television shows.
