Chaplin's Gold Rush (original 1925 Version) Los Angeles

PostWed Feb 15, 2012 12:35 am

The self proclaimed "silent movie theatre" Cinefamily in Hollywood, CA is having a run of Charlie Chaplin's Gold Rush throughout the beginning of March. But with a brand new restored 35mm print and as it was originally shown back in 1925 (minus Charlie Chaplin's narration and with a new score). I personally have never seen it without Chaplin's narration and score he added later in his life, so it will definitely be interesting to see. Along with Gold Rush, Cinefamily is also showing restored versions of Modern Times, The Circus and City Lights, tickets are $12.

:o A complete comprehensive restoration of THE GOLD RUSH with full orchestra score is long since overdue. Maybe the Chaplin Estate finally realized that people want more, and not less. Let's hope so anyway. The ideal score in my view would be the Bill Perry one, but preformed by a full orchestra. However, many years ago there was another orchestral score to THE GOLD RUSH that was quite superb. That version has disappeared and I don't have the details as to the composer. It is a very different film in it's original form. In 1941 when preparing the sound re-issue Chaplin inexplicably cut some of the most powerful footage out of the picture. Making the story far less coherent and effective. One wonders what he was thinking? Those restored bits and pieces here and there are crucial to the films overall impact. Although some scenes are probably lost forever. It may never be seen as it looked in it's original Road Show engagements.

"Self-proclaimed"? The Silent Movie Theatre existed long before Cinefamily. It's the name of the building, not the company. No different from the Egyptian Theatre being home to the American Cinematheque.

The MK2 restoration of CHaplins's films was prior 2010.

This news is from 2010, and they said to have the original camera negative for The Kid:

But the BD of The Kid, despite decent, did not look like a silent that come from camera negative.
Keep thinking...
