Singin' in the Rain 60th B'day Screenings - 12 July (US)

PostMon Jun 11, 2012 3:41 pm

From http://www.fathomevents.com/classics/event/singinintherain.aspx?d=7/12/2012 - you can enter your postcode at the website to find out if it's playing near you. There is also a full list of participating theatres at http://www.fathomevents.com/upcoming/alllocations.aspx?eventid=1097.

I wonder when there'll be further details about the Blu-Ray? I've practically worn the grooves off my Special Edition DVD. If they can top the extras on that, they'll be doing pretty well!

I went to the screening of CASABLANCA and if this one has as many problems as were reported across the country (on TCM's site) I'd give it a pass. At the CASABLANCA one the entire audience demanded refunds.

What were the problems? Did they show it at the wrong aspect ratio?

Per the TCM chat board, there were problems including: wrong aspect ratio, stopping and starting, sound, stopping before the end of the film, etc all over the country.
At my theater it took about three people, besides the twelve year old running the booth, to figure out how to start the feed. Then after we barely escaped some R rated raunch fest, the pre show features started and, just as it was getting interesting, the 12 YO decided to fast forward and start the feature. Once it got going, it was fine but please -- at the prices they charge for these events, I'll watch the DVD instead.

At my screening, we sat in the dark muttering to ourselves while the introduction played (without the projector on) and THEN the manager of the theater had the film run. Afterwards, they claimed that they didn't know that they were allowed to show the introduction. Blech.

Another great restoration work from Warner.

The original camera negatives for Singin in The Rain burned in a vault fire in the 70's. But fine grain protection masters survived and it was used for this new 4K tranfer and digital restoration.

Looks practically so good as a Blu Ray restored from camera negative. Maybe just a littlew bit too grain reduced, but this is a matter of taste for Blu Ray mastering.

Doesn't look like there's any grain reduction going on there at all. Did you click on the Blu-ray images to see them full size?

I saw in full size...
A film in such resolution scan, even a modern 35mm, should have some noteceable and cleargrain pattern. If it have not, so they applied grain reduction. What you see is the remains of grain, that still can create some film look.

See The Wizard of Oz Blu Ray, restored in film resolution, and you will see some nice grain.

It's a matter of taste if they apply or not grain reduction. I'm not oposed to reduce grain if they do not reduce all the grain and if they make it right (without killing many image details as happnes when use poor grain reduction tools).
So, I can say this Blu ray was a good job, as there is still some grain and image details it's very good.

The restored files itself, 4K files (4000 lines of resolution) must look even better.

But keep in mind that a release print of a movie has at LEAST two extra levels of grain than what you get from a video that's transferred from the original negative. So for some of the films released on Blu-ray there will be significantly less grain than you'd expect, or than what you saw in the theater. Seeing less grain than you expect doesn't automatically mean that grain reduction was used.

I know... I know... And also depends of the intermediate film stock they use.
Today internegatives can be very good if made in prime intermediate stock and in prime film printers. But prime film stocks are more expansive, and prime film printing too.

SIngin in The Rain it's a great restoraton work.
It's just that they had a different preference for grain for this Blu Ray than what they choose for Wizard of Oz.

Many people prefer that way, less grainy. And other people prefer a little more film like.
