~~~~~ PROGRAM ~~~~~
~ 15 minute pre-show audio - Starts at 7:45 featuring tropical exotica music!!!
~ People of Mexico (1939) - Produced by Encyclopedia Britannica. This well produced classroom film classic takes us to Mexico to view rural life in ancient and modern times, the different regions, customs, and day to day living.
~ Belles of the South Seas (1944) - Castle Films. This short subjects takes us to the south seas islands where we see the various native peoples, their lives and view the differences between their cultures. A definite time capsule.
Do any of these tribal cultures survive today, nearly 70 years later?
~ Routes Of American Airlines: Detroit (c.1960) - A five minute introduction to the great city of Detroit, its industries and tourist attractions... before the auto industries disappeared. Shown are Boblo Island ships, many views of downtown and long gone businesses and street scenes. This is rarely seen '60s Michigan kitch which may have been part of a longer air travel film.
~ Across the Seven Seas; The Golden Pearl (c.1962) - in unfaded IB Technicolor!!! This steadily paced "The Golden Pearl" television episode was part of the "Across The Seven Seas" kitch travelogue series hosted by Jack Douglas and produced by Bing Crosby Productions.
Jack Douglas flies us to early 1960s Singapore where we can see modern day busy life, culture and night life of the city in bright, full color Technicolor.
Strangely, very little is known about this "Across the Seven Seas" travelogue TV series. Information about it and Jack Douglas is virtually nonexistent in research resources on the internet.
The film print being shown is exceptionally rare, in three color Technicolor, and this is possibly the first time any episode has been seen by an audience in decades.
~ The Return Of Phileas Fogg (c.1957) - Produced by The Unity Fund of Allegheny County. Executive produced by Dick Roxas, directed by Ted Post and starring David Niven, Beverly Washburn, and Osa Massen.
The Unity Fund of Allegheny County was an organization that used to raise money for Goodwill Industries of the Pittsburg area in Pennsylvania. Someone donated funds to them specifically to make this fifteen minute promotional film.
In it David Niven, who had recently starred of Around The World In 80 Days (1956), travels in his balloon to Pittsburg and takes part of a parade which ends at a Unity Fund hospital for kids. He entertains all with tales of his world travels and with his personal charm. The head nurse, played by Osa Mason, tells Niven that a special, bed ridden girl (Beverly Washburn) is a big fan of Phileas Fogg and his adventures and that the child would probably feel much better if he could visit her at her home. He does and what follows is heart warming as well as informative on The Unity Fund's mission.
This recently discovered short film is a previously unknown screen credit for all three of it's stars. Nothing about it could be found on the internet except for a brief sentence in a trade journal.
It was never copyrighted. Its an orphaned film and its sole purpose was probably to be shown to civic groups and the public to raise money and awareness for The Unity Fund of Allegheny County.
This week's Boob Tube Movie Night at Populace Cafe Friday night is most likely the first time The Return Of Phileas Fogg has been seen in public since at least the early 1960s.
~~~~~ GOOD NIGHT ~~~~~
