Oct 24 TCM Puts FRANKENSTEIN & BRIDE on Big Screen

PostThu Oct 04, 2012 4:55 pm

Phillyrich alerted me to this. Is it just me or is TCM keeping this secret?

Follow Fathom events online. To Kill A Mockingbird coming in November. Saw Lawrence of Arabia last night and it looked fantastic. Frankenstein & The Bride sure to be a treat on the big screen! Plenty of venues in DC area. Go to buy tickets (you don't have to buy) and put in your zip code for local shows.

I received the email message from TCM with that same image.
And, over the last couple of weeks I have seen at least two different promos on TCM about the event - one short and one that was longer, even including a brief clip of Sarah Karloff talking about her Dad.

So, no, they've not kept it a secret from me!

Or go to the Stanford Theatre (Palo Alto)

Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein are playing Oct 26-28 at the Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto. Just as much fun, and in a great theatre... We've been doing lots of rare James Whale in our current calendar. Very interesting and for the most part pretty good films. www.stanfordtheatre.org

And as Cyndi could have added, if you go to Palo Alto you,ll be seeing real 35mm prints
The TCM events have been using bogus digital video versions

I wondered if the TCM theater screenings would use projected DVD or whatever. I have not seen - at least not that I've been aware of - movies digitally projected instead of by 35mm so the Oct 24 event should be interesting.

Upate: I just arrived home from watching FRANKENSTEIN/BRIDE at my local multiplex. I asked the manager how they were being projected and she told me by digital dvr. Not quite knowing what to expect, I sat in the dead center (no pun intended) and was joined by my son and his girlfriend. A number of things were shown first re TCM and I must admit they looked crystal clear on the screen. But the real test came when FRANKENSTEIN began. I've seen lots of 35mm vintage films through the years and this digital dvr is at least its equal. I was equally impressed with the way BRIDE looked on the screen and better yet, the younger generation was impressed too. So FWIW, I'm sold on the new process.

It was excellent at the theater here in Dallas. Very sharp picture, excellent sound. I noticed things that I had never seen before. Recognized Fay Holderness, who played Ollie's wife in Hog Wild. If I had a complaint I would have lowered the black level. It was a litte high.
Very enjoyable evening. About 50 in the house.

Speaking of noticing people, I could swear Carl Laemmle Sr. was standing at one of the tables as Little Maria's father walks by with her body.
