:? Does it have to be the actual laser-disc, or can it be DVD-R transfers? You don't say?

So your question is, do you want to break the law or not?

:? With respect, do you honestly think anyone that has this hasn't transferred it to DVD-R, or is not buying the set in the first place to transfer it to DVD-R or some other media? Be serious now. You have likely done the same thing yourself, or would if you have the laser-disc set.

I had the laser, but sold it for an insanely high price to someone on Ebay. I still have a copy of the set, but it's a legal VHS set I bought years ago. It suits my needs just fine.

It's a pity that some people can't recognize that they are doing wrong and assume that everyone has as low a regard for property rights as they do, just because they WANT something.

Wasn't the DVD release in the UK pulled for not having the proper rights clearances? Is owning that set improper because it never should've been released?

I don't mean to split hairs, or step on anyone's toes. Just a thought.

My understanding is that it was actually on shelves for a day or two, but I cannot confirm that. Pure rumor. Still, it's a great series. A shame that it's not more readily available.

To the best of my knowledge, it didn't come anywhere near any shelves. Whether any promo's were pressed up I don't know, but if they had, I suspect they would have turned up on Ebay by now. I'm still grateful for my off-air VHS tapes.
I could use some digital restoration myself...

For $500 my perfectly legal laser disc set can be yours. You can then make all the DVD-R 's as your conscience will allow afterwards.

I think if that got on a shelf I would have not had my order canceled by Amazon UK. Whatever year it was, the release date was March 20 which was my birthday-still is. I suspect it was never pressed as the rights problem would have come up before this happened. And my order was sunk long before that release date. The question remains as to why the VHS & LDs came out troublefree all those years before. Network Video UK told me, at the time, that their contract with the Thames material forbade them answering reasons why to anyone. I have the book and the CD of the music in my collection and because of night work during the TV screening period I never saw this epic. When I got into LDs about the end of 1994, it would appear this set had been discontinued and my supplier of discs in Lansing/MI had had phone calls from, I think, Martin Scorcese offering over US$700 for it but there was no hope then. With inflation and the further rarity due to the DVD cancellation, US$500 would be a steal at this time. However, I am not in the happy position to take this offer on or offer more than that $500. Only having a state pension can be a major problem.

:o The year was 2006. May have been announced in late 2005. Never even went to print. Or if it did, I never heard about this having happened. Very doubtful.

It came out on laser, this was confirmed to me by Kevin Brownlow.

It is also confirmed to me every time I look at my laserdisc shelf. Hard to believe now, but toward the end of the laser era, Hollywood was actually remaindered! IIRC my box put me back some $30. Laserdisc economics were totally bizarre. Niche films were released with a single print run at a relative high MSRP. When the run sold out scalpers would ask, and presumably get, exorbitant prices. When that market would be exhausted, it wasn't unusual to pick the disc up as a remainder or close-out a year later. Got the Jolson box at Tower for $20. At one of the 'cons, a distributor told me that a particular silent star's box was sold out with no plans for another run because of disappointing sales. Only in laserdisc economics could the words "sold out" and "disappointing sales" be used in the same breath.

If the Greeks drop out of the Eurozone I understand they're considering using laserdiscs as their new currency.

I noticed that the Demonoid bittorrent site has the entire HOLLYWOOD series available for download as XviD files. I have the laserdisc set already. The problem with laserdiscs is that laserdisc players don't last forever.

Then watch Greece zoom to the top of the economic chart!

I have the VHS set. Watched it only once because it isn't captioned. If anyone is interested in buying it, PM me. I demand exorbitant prices, but I'm susceptible to flattery.

Neither do laserdisc watchers, so for me, it's just a race against time, man vs. machine.
