Looking for DOMBEY AND SON (1917)

PostThu Mar 29, 2012 8:40 pm

Looking for the 1917 British feature DOMBEY AND SON in any film and/or video format.

If I remember correctly, this used to be offered by Charles Tarbox's Film Classics Exchange.

Please respond direct to: fredguida44@yahoo.com

And please check out www.charlesdickensonscreen.com for a tribute to the great Edward Wagenknecht that includes a wonderful contribution by Anthony Slide.

Is there also a separate 1919 version or is this the same as the 1917 version?

The 1919 film was the American release of the original 1917 British feature; not a separate film.

I have a July 11, 1919 review from "Variety" in which the title is listed as "Dombey and Sons" (plural). Not sure if "Variety" misprinted the title or if it was in fact changed for the American release. Need to look for more reviews.

Do you have it?

I played for this in WK Everson's class at NYU. Perhaps there's a 16mm in the WKE collection at NYU/GEH.

Thanks for the link to your site. I am familiar with your excellent work with silent films.

Were you also a student of WKE? I was privileged to study under him (and Jay Leyda) at NYU in the late seventies and early eighties.

I think you are right. I do seem to remember that there was a copy of DOMBEY AND SON in the WKE collection. I'll look into it.

It is frustrating, though, when you know that prints of this thing -- including 8mm and Super-8 -- must be out there!

By the way, you might be interested in the January 10 article on my web site that quotes WKE on DOMBEY AND SON. It includes a plug for his AMERICAN SILENT FILM See: http://charlesdickensonscreen.com/?p=542

Fred, I accompanied silent films for Everson's classes at NYU from 1982-86 or '87.
