Wanted: 7 Oscar Nominated Films

PostSat Jul 30, 2011 3:14 pm

Hi, I have been watching every film nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. After taking my time on this fun project, I have about 30 left to watch. The problem is this, I need to find copies on VHS or DVD of the following 7 films:

East Lynne 1930 (is this indeed missing footage?)
The White Parade 1934
Hold Back the Dawn 1941
One Foot in Heaven 1941
The Invaders 1942
The Pied Piper 1942
The Emigrants 1972 (too pricey on used VHS)

Maybe members here know if any here are "lost." Obviously, I hope one day "The Patriot" 1928 will be found. Anyone have these movies or know an inexpensive seller? Please message me by replying here. -Gwen

The consensus from a rare showing at Cinecon a few years back was, if I recall correctly, that East Lynne wasn't missing anything, and you wouldn't want more of it anyway...

The Invaders was the (probably cut) US release version of 49th Parallel, which is out on Criterion DVD.

I don't believe any are lost; I've certainly seen One Foot in Heaven on TV, to name one.

Thank you both! Yes, I may have to splurge for copies of "Hold Back the Dawn" (the international DVD) and "The Emigrants" (used VHS). I did see the previous "East Lynne" thread on this forum too. Another member also e-mailed me "The Invaders" is aka "49th Parallel"--good news is I can stream it on Netflix. Still hopeful some folks on here may have copies to trade or sell of the other 6 listed movies. Failing that, I can hope Turner Classic Movies includes them next March near Oscar season--the request a movie section of their website has always worked well for me. Keep suggestions coming.

Indeed, and Powell and Pressburger films seemed to suffer more than most, the US distributed version was shorn of 19 minutes. Blimp was shorn of 43.....
I could use some digital restoration myself...

I don't know if anyone else has been searching for the films in my original post. I have updates on 3.

"The Emmigrants" is also available for rent/download from I Tunes.

"The White Parade" & "East Lynne" are both available for viewing at UCLA's Powell Library--I'm told that's the only way anyone has seen these films short of attending festivals.
