Valentino and the Tango

PostThu Aug 11, 2011 7:47 am

First of all, happy birthday Jorge!

Here is a link to a nice article about Valentino's relationship to the Tango:

http://www.lptango.com.ar/en/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49:-rodolfo-valentino-the-milonga-enthusiast&catid=7:tango-around-the-world&Itemid=8

and likewise, a link to Tomas Mumos Lievas' tango Rodolfo Valentino, as performed by the Orquestra Tipica Agesilao Ferrazzano in 1927:

Thanks for this. The notion that Valentino was friends with Francisco Canaro comes as news to me - fascinating if it's true. My computer doesn't seem to want to load the song you posted. It's possible that it's a region problem at my end.

Off in the real world, I've been studying tango for 10 years (by coincidence, I'm off to a rehearsal for a demonstration dance as soon as I finish this post), which dovetails nicely with the Rudy fandom. I wrote a short piece about the `Four Horsemen' tango not long ago at http://brooksiescollection.tumblr.com/post/6339772806/.

I doubt that any was ever shot, but I'd love it if footage of he and Natacha Rambova dancing tango for the Mineralava tour ever turned up! :)

Whenever I see this photo from THE FOUR HORSEMEN, I think of the Tango. I recently learned to play an Ibeniz Tango on the piano. If it's difficult to dance, it's also difficult to play!

Thanks!!!!!!!!

The most amusing thing about that picture is that the "rough" neighborhood of La Boca is actually never shown in the Valentino film. And when he dances the tango there is no bandoneon to be seen (it does appear in Stoheim's THE MERRY WIDOW).

The trick to peform a tango is that, although the majority them until the 30s are written in 2/4 they should actually be performed at 4/8.

If you want to play an authentic tango, and being in Nitrateville, I have to suggest this one, which was originally written for MANHANDLED and composer Cátulo Castillo received an award from Paramount:

Agesilao Ferrazano's story is quite curious: http://www.todotango.com/english/creado ... azzano.asp

Indeed, Ferrazzano's story is very interesting. I expanded upon it here:

There is only the smallest snippet of the pair from during the Mineralava Tour. It's seens in the Hollywood episode of Valentino and Swanson and also the A&E Biography documentary on Rudy. It's only a few mere seconds. I believe a version of the Holyywood episode is up on youtube.

I've seen both but the snatch of footage must have vanished from my memory, I'll have to check them out again. A few seconds is nonetheless a few seconds!

The best description for tango that I've ever heard is `chess for your feet' - both intellectually and physically stimulating. And that's even before you try dancing it in spurs like Rudy did.
