Anyone here subscribe to Vudu? Amazon Prime?

PostFri Sep 28, 2012 1:41 pm

Does anyone here subscribe to Vudu for streaming and if so, do you recommend it? Pluses, minuses? How does it stack up to Netflix? and what about Amazon prime?

I have Amazon Prime. The streaming video seems fine quality-wise, and a lot of the older films are accessible for free if you have Prime. The real question is whether you end up using Amazon regularly enough for other things to justify the subscription fee. They charge around $3 for a week-long rental for most things, even if you're a Prime member.

The range does seem better than Netflix, and because they have deals with some of the more niche distributors such as Sinister Cinema, you can find some quite obscure things there.

Well, I order all kinds of things on amazon and the yearly prime fee has more than paid for itself in the "free shipping." It probably paid for itself in about a month or two.

The free streaming of many films/tv shows is a nice bonus with the prime account.

I've streamed some films on my tablet with few issues. I've not tried viewing any streaming on my actual television. My only complaint is I can't seem to find a categorty for silents, which is annoying. You have to hunt for titles or under the general genre of drama, comedy etc.

To me the free streaming videos you get is icing on the cake, not the main reason I have Prime. For me it's the shipping. I don't have to worry about shipping costs-- no waiting to order until I have enough to make the shipping cost worth it. I've even ordered something for less than a dollar and gotten free two day shipping (well, not "free" exactly since I did have to buy the Prime membership to begin with, of course). Here's two crazy examples:

1) I had an elliptical trainer delivered with the free two-day shipping. The thing would have cost a fortune in shipping if purchased at another company. It was so big and heavy that the UPS guy asked me to help him.

2) I bought something for 96 cents that was shipped from Hong Kong to me in the US. I have no idea how that company made a profit (it wasn't fulfilled by Amazon itself).

The streaming video quality is very good, I just don't really have time to watch much. Some things are even available in HD that aren't out on Blu-ray yet, such as Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House and Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein (though I think the latter is due out soon, if not already). Unlike Netflix, Amazon is rental-based rather than "all you can eat," except for what's available on Prime, which isn't everything. I have a close friend who dumped Netflix for Prime and is very happy with his choice. One bummer that may not matter to you is that Prime streaming is not available on iPhones and iPods, only on iPads, whereas Netflix is available on everything. I don't know whether this is because of Apple or because Amazon hasn't gotten around to it.

Since Prime has a free one month trial, maybe you should just try it out. I'm not sure how much stuff you order, but with Christmas around the corner the free two-day shipping might help you get a jump start and be worth it to you even if you don't end up liking the streaming. If you have Prime, a little icon shows you whether a specific item is part of it or not (you have to be logged in of course so the system knows you have Prime). And turning on One-Click ordering makes things even more convenient.

Sorry if I sound like an Amazon cheerleader, but I've been using them since about a month after they opened in '96 and have ordered a lot over the years with no problems. Returns are easy too, if necessary.
