Plasma or LCD?

PostFri Aug 26, 2011 3:50 pm

A new TV is needed. Which one, or does it really matter? I saw the thread on best TVs for silent films but it got a bit technical.

I just want the best looking picture, if indeed there is much difference between the two.

There are many lies today... Like the called LED TV, that in reality it's a LCD that uses white LED light. SO it's not a true LED TV.

Plasma it'costs too much.

What about a digital projetor ???
Some home digital projectors already hanle 1920 horizontal pixels (full HD), and costs 1000 dollars.

The problems is that these new full HD home projector had not a great contrast and not a very bright lamp like home projectors of lower definition.
Keep thinking...

Congrats!

I hope its a full 1080p screen with 24p capability, so you can see the glories that good Blu-rays can be capable of! Upscaled playback of well-made DVDs will also look outstanding, and may actually look better than some of the poorly-encoded Blu-rays that soften the grain with too much Digital Noise Reduction and put edge-enhancement halos around everything.

I think most of the newer ones do...although I can't vouch for that one. I have a 42" and 50", both Panasonic. I'm confident you'll be pleased. I've never had a problem with either and the picture is great.

You’ve made a wise choice. :D

I bought my Panasonic 50 inch plasma Full HD 1080p a few weeks ago, and as mentioned already I also find it has a wide viewing angle and good blacks. At the same time I got myself a Sony Blu Ray player.

I’ve re-screened a few old DVD favourites - “42nd Street”, “Citizen Kane”, “Portrait of Jennie”, “The Third Man”, and the upscaling by the player certainly is an improvement. The Blu Ray of “An American in Paris” is truly a wonder to behold in its clarity and colour.

The only DVD silent I have purchased so far is “The Jazz Singer (Region 4-PAL) and even with this the picture quality is dramatically better – particularly the blacks.

So far I’m very pleased with my choice.

My big “problem” now is to decide which silent should be my first Blu Ray purchase. :?

For silents on Blu-ray I would recommend starting with THE GENERAL and/or CITY GIRL, then probably SUNRISE and PEOPLE ON SUNDAY. And if you're a fan of the film, by all means get METROPOLIS. If you're into Antarctic exploration or the Scott expedition, be sure to get THE GREAT WHITE SILENCE. Then maybe try the Keaton box set of shorts and start adding Keaton features. Of course you'll need to have Region A capability for the Kino titles and Criterion releases.

There's not a whole lot of silents out there yet other than Keaton, although by the end of the year we'll have THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, THE BIRTH OF A NATION, WAY DOWN EAST, STRIKE, more Keatons, and possibly BEN-HUR (assuming Warner Brothers bump up the silent version to HD like Paramount did with THE TEN COMMANDMENTS for the deluxe box set of the remake). There are French region-free Blu-rays of the three main Borzage silents that were on the Fox DVD box set. Kino's also got THE BLACK PIRATE and POTEMKIN, besides METROPOLIS and the Keatons. If you can watch Region A, Criterion's fine STAGECOACH Blu-ray includes John Ford's BUCKING BROADWAY in HD, but the print is a bit contrasty and grainy from the preservation dupe.

All HDTVs these days have 24p support, so you're all set for Blu-Ray.

I was actually looking at some Blu Ray players but if I was to buy I would need a multi-region player - There don't appear to be any around here in the UK.

I'm not terriby interested in Blu Ray itself but my existing DVD player is showing signs of imminent demise and I figured if I'm buying I may as well have the capability.

Gotta be multi-region though.
