Our Gang Reunion on YOU ASKED FOR IT

PostSat May 14, 2011 5:48 pm

A viewer request prompted a reunion of the silent-era Our Gang on Art Baker's You Asked For It, and fortunately this was one of the (apparently) few episodes of the show for which a kinescope survives.

No one seems to know the date of the telecast, but it's got live commercials for Skippy Peanut Butter, which began its sponsorship in 1951, and there's an appearance by Our Gang cinematographer Art Lloyd, who passed away in November 1954, so that narrows the range a little.

An article with some background on the reunion can be found here:

(Caution: contains an unsettling frame grab of a semi-toothless Mickey Daniels)

The entire episode is available on a surprisingly good Alpha Video DVD here:

The Our Gang reunion segment can be seen on YouTube here:

Also in this episode: a performance by the same birds from Bill and Coo (1948); a guy who strums a ukelele while singing "Mule Train" in Hawaiian; and several models from Pin-Up magazine, who re-enact their poses and autograph the backdrops they're standing in front of. The last model's pen immediately breaks when she tries to write with it. She blushes and shrugs helplessly until the camera cuts away. Art Baker promises her a chance to try it again later in the show, which never happens.

Good stuff.

The Chicago Tribune contained references to an Our Gang reunion on "You Asked for It" in its issues of 3 and 8 March 1951, the latter saying it would be aired "tomorrow". The program was broadcast on the Dumont network on Fridays at 8:30 Eastern at the time, so I think it's safe to say that 9 March 1951 is the original air date (unless they had more than one Our Gang presentation).

Thanks, Harold! There's a reference or two in the show about how the Gang looked "25 years ago," so 1951 fits very well.

That was unsettling - from the host continually referring to Joe Cobb as 'Fatty' and Mickey as 'Freckles' to his omittance of shaking Farina's hand (albeit in a friendly manner.....)

And now you know why so many Our Gang imposters could label themselves "Fatty" or "Freckles"!
