Alibi (1929), Lured (1947) from Kino out-of-print

PostFri Jul 20, 2012 1:46 pm

So I got an e-mail awhile from Kino stating that Alibi (1929), Lured (1947) and a few other films are being discontinued. I didn't think too much about the e-mail, thinking I'll get around to getting them but, lo and behold, they weren't kidding! These DVDs are now completely removed from Kino's website. I'm kinda p'oed at myself because Kino was selling 'em for only $6.99. Does anyone know if Kino has any blu plans for these films and that's why they're discontinued? It would seem such a shame that these films are now just unavailable. You can still get them on Amazon but I'm a little gunshy if there's the possibility of blu-rays; on the other hand I've always been intending on purchasing these films but just never got around to it and I'd hate to think that if I don't snag 'em now they'll be gone for good.

Although it's usually me who gets wind of a bargain only after it's long gone--as was the case with the last CRT TVs, Walmart's Magnavox 514 recorders, & a host of others ne'r to return--this time, I overcame my inertia in time to order Alibi & several other silents on that hit-list.

What are the other titles mentioned in Kino's e-mail?

Mother of pearl, I spoke too soon! It was Asphalt I bought, along with Woman on the Moon, A Fool There Was, Diary of a Lost Girl, & Beloved Rogue. Others on the list, & there were many, I don't remember, except Cigarette Girl, which I regret omitting.

Those Magnavox 514 recorders are very hard to come by. I have a Magnavox 515 HDD DVD recorder myself and when I was at Walmart picking it up, the guy in front of me was getting a Magnavox 513 recorder.

I'm pretty sure Alibi, Lured, and It Happened Tomorrow are the only ones actually gone for good and out-of-print (them and the "Glamour Girls" box set but those are still available individually). I think the other titles are just part of Kino's usual 2-month or so sale that they do.

Dang, I got last-minute copies of Alibi and It Happened Tomorrow, but missed out on Lured. I see it for $15 to $20 on Amazon, maybe I should grab a copy before the Amazon Marketplace vampires start selling it for $50 and up due to its so-called "rarity".

I'm thinking about doing that too, I'm just wondering if there's blu upgrades of these titles coming and that's why they're being deleted or if these titles really are gone for good.

Well, "Lured" is in the "Glamour Girls" boxed set. That's a couple of dollars higher, but you get four more films.

The only difference, as far as I know, is that the films are in slim-line cases and "The Blue Angel" only has the English language version.

That's an idea, but I already have three out of the five titles in the GG box, and I'd rather have Pandora on blu-ray, if I was going to pick it up.

Lured is still listed as in stock at DeepDiscount at a price of $15.82. It looks like most of the Kino/Lorber catalog is on sale.

What luck, I've discovered my local video store (an independent, God bless 'em), has Lured on its shelves (I believe they may even have a Douglas Sirk section). I'm guessing it hasn't seen the sunlight in a while, so I'll hop over there and take it for a spin.

Does anyone know if the silent version of ALIBI still exists? I do like the talkie version but the silent promises to be much better without the stilted dialogue.
