Olivia Da Havilland/ Joan Fontaine

PostFri Aug 10, 2012 5:35 pm

I see that Olivia recently turned 96 and her sister Joan is 94, was the rumor of their rivalry real or made up by the studio. Do they see each other today?

By all indications, the answers to your questions are "real" and "no", respectively.

An interview with Olivia from 2010:

In recent years she has always refused to discuss Joan directly, but for anyone in doubt about whether their antagonism is real, that little comment about "Avoid[ing] destructive people" in the above interview pretty much says it all.

Yes, I've heard from other sources who would be in the know that the two are far from friendly.

...but when Joan tried to congratulate her – well, a photograph shows Olivia's discomfort. 'There was an unfortunate situation backstage,' agrees Olivia guardedly. 'An unhappy situation.'

Thanks, though the photo doesn't really say much, IMO.

It's really a shame at such advanced ages they can't forgive each other, too bad their 2 daughters haven't been able to bring them together. I know Joan's ex-husband married Ann Rutherford who recently died.

Sisters in spite
Oscar winners Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine star in Hollywood’s longest running feud

By LOU LUMENICK

Last Updated: 11:59 PM, August 19, 2012

When Olivia de Havilland celebrated her 96th birthday last month in Paris, it was a public event worthy of Hollywood royalty — after all, she’s not only a two-time winner of the Best Actress Oscar, but stars in two of the most beloved classic-age movies, “Gone With the Wind’’ and “The Adventures of Robin Hood.’’

Conspicuously absent from the festivities was de Havilland’s estranged younger sister, Joan Fontaine, 94, another Best Actress winner who by all accounts is as robustly healthy as her sibling, and lives an ocean and a continent away in Carmel, Calif.
At 96, Olivia de Havilland (left) has refused to speak to her sister Joan Fontaine for more than 35 years.

The sisters have carried on Hollywood’s longest-running and most bitter feud, currently in its eighth decade — clashing over roles, Oscars and lovers, among other things. They have not spoken in 35 years.

Just because you're related to someone doesn't mean you need to have a relationship with them.

I think I find it sad in particular because I'm the type of person that likes closure and not a hostile grudge. I would get these two legendary actresses together on Oprah and have them shake hands and say their goodbyes with one another before heading into their own separate lives. They are both extremely old now, and I have reached the conclusion that one of them will die in the next few years without a resolution...

I'm surprised Olivia has not rushed out her long awaited autobiography so her sister Joan can read it before she passes.
