Kelly:
This film has never been lost. A copy has been at the Library of Congress for well over 30 years. Rather some people mix it up with Jeanne Eagels other 1929 talkie JEALOUSY which is a lost film. Both films are directed by Jean di Limur.

Well, technically, I suppose, you can say that the original release version of the 1929 version of THE LETTER is lost. The surviving version is believed to be a workprint, as it is missing transitions (like dissolves) and the final music/effects audio mix (with some completely silent shots that would have had some other sound). There was some discussion about this in another thread some time back. Nevertheless, Jeanne Eagles' performance should have won the Oscar that year over the overly mannered performance of Mary Pickford in COQUETTE. Ruth Chatterton and even Bessie Love were better than Pickford that year, but Eagles is still simply amazing despite the drawbacks of early talkie technology and the surviving material.

I have a feeling there may have been some scenes missing from the 1929 WA version I have seen. Seems to be a few gaps here and there in story continuity and there may be something missing. Then again I might be unfairly comparing it to the Davis version which is more developed and polished. Jeanne Eagels does shine though.

Oh wow you are so lucky having the 1929 version of "The Letter" on your US TCM! Here in the UK we have a terrible watered down version of TCM! There are not many classic movies broadcast, hundreds of repeats, and very seldom anything from the 20's or 30's. It's truly dreadful and I don't rent that channel any more, there is even a "Shopping Hour" in the middle of the afternoon!

Anyway my copy of "The Letter" (1929) is not very good, or clear. It's obviously from a VHS tape, and is murky and dark and flickers and rolls. From what I recall there was no music either? The film just "started" cold? It seemed to be missing a reel? The person who copied it for me said they thought it was missing a reel? I only watched it the once as it was such a bad "viewing experience" technically. I would love to have a decent copy of it in my collection. Thank God it is still available, and not lost.

If the Letter available for Euro players you could probably score through Amazoncom.UK or TCM archives it is there

The Letter from Warner Archives is quite good. Will play well on any cheap and widely available multi region DVD player no matter where you are. There is no real handicap for anyone not to own a multi region player anymore wherever they live.

I agree that TCM outside the USA is quite disappointing. The Australian version is bad. Limited films and endless repeats. I get very envious when I read the US TCM schedule.

Looks like The Letter got pulled from the schedule and replaced with The Right to Live.

According to the schedule as posted on the TCM website at this moment, THE LETTER (1929) is still listed for Oct. 24. But on the Canadian schedule it has been replaced with THE RIGHT TO LIVE. Sometimes TCM can't get the Canadian TV rights for certain films so on the Canadian schedule they have to be replaced by other films. That may be the case here.

From the original Paramount Music Cue Sheet for THE LETTER, dated March 7, 1929, here is a listing of all the music that was used in the movie:

1. Chinese Love Song From Po Ling And Ming Toy Suite. (Friml).
2. Cometh As A Bride From Po Ling And Ming Toy Suite. (Friml).
3. Pell Street. (E. Whithorne).
4. Djalak Idjo From Lagoe-Lagoe Suite Opus 34. (Paul Seelig).
5. Andante Pathetico. (Irene Berge).

Just noticed that immeadiately before THE LETTER, TCM will be broadcasting Borzage's THE CIRCLE, and Rex Ingram's THE MAGICIAN. That's quite a humdinger of a morning.

I see. It's not Monday, it's Maughamday.

And I am glad to see that they passed up the opportunity to show, for umpteenth time, "Of Human Bondage" and Wyler's "The Letter", and instead scheduled seldom seen stuff like"Trio" and "Encore".

I love TCM.

Hi George. Do you mean the Bette Davis version or the Eleanor Parker version? If you mean the Bette Davis 1934 version then what kind of a print to US TCM broadcast? I have NEVER EVER been able to find on DVD a pristine copy of Bette's "OF HUMAN BONDAGE"? And I would LOVE to! I would pay over the odds to get a decent copy on DVD that is watchable. The film has fallen into public domain so any Tom Dick or Harry can release it in, usually, dreadful 16mm scratched dupe condition... So what kind of state is the TCM version in?
