Re: Prepare to kill yourself

I saw it on Monday and enjoyed it quite a bit. For the most part they've captured the amusing nature of a classic Stooges short in a feature length movie, something the real Stooges did not succeed at.

If you regard every nuance of the original Stooges as sacred this new movie will fall short of divine perfection.

It has many elements that don't work well but that was true of the original Stooges' output also. They made a lot of clunkers.

I was impressed at how much did work. The amount of choreography required for the slapstick must have been daunting, and to pull it off after having to recast all the leads just two months before shooting... ouch.

I thought Sean Hayes as Larry Fine was the weakest of the three, but Fine had to be the hardest one to pull off and Hayes wasn't bad.

I had not seen any trailers until after I saw the movie. I'd say the trailers are poor representations of the film. Somehow that seems to be true of most trailers.

Those aren't the real Farrellys, so it too qualifies as a gag. (No actual names so I won't spoil it more.)

I was surprised and delighted to learn that this film comes not from Columbia, but from 20th Century Fox. I assume that it must be the final installment of the trilogy that began with SOUP TO NUTS in the Thirties, and continued with SNOW WHITE & THE THREE STOOGES in the Sixties. Finally, in this new century, all of my nagging questions about the lack of continuity will be answered.

Nice observation! Fox should create a boxed set.

Actually, I believe they have reissued the first two as a set.

Disrespectful

PostMon May 14, 2012 12:21 pm

Haven't seen the new Stooges movie, and I don't have a desire to, based on this review: http://www.catholicnews.com/data/movies/12mv044.htm

The original Stooges were slapsticky, but their films would never have disrespected Catholic sisters as this film apparently does. The 21st-century idea of comedy is one reason I prefer to stick to the classics.

Imagine the field day they could have had with the priesthood; you'd have to not see the film even more than you already haven't.

I'm glad they didn't go THAT far with the desecration. But again, this is why I prefer the older films.

That's right, in the days of the original Stooges they would have restricted themselves to poking fun at black porters and escapees from Japanese internment centres.
