Lots of Myrna Loy/Kay Francis/Warren William/Lionel Barrymore titles I've been wanting to see, among other things. Would have liked to see some less-common Cagney films, but I'll be happy to see One, Two, Three again. Plus a good chance to catch up on some Deborah Kerr titles.

Anything else in there to get excited about?

I haven't seen The Rickshaw Man yet. The Seventh Veil is perverse. Fun, but perverse.

But I've seen darn near everything listed! TCM has run nearly all the same films for these stars since 2008. Kay Francis Day is especially dispiriting for me, absolutely nothing I haven't seen before. In the last year, I find myself scraping the schedule looking for something they haven't run lately, or (hopefully) ever. Two popped up today, in fact, but it's a rare occasion.

Kay Francis Day is especially dispiriting for me, absolutely nothing I haven't seen before. In the last year, I find myself scraping the schedule looking for something they haven't run lately, or (hopefully) ever. Two popped up today, in fact, but it's a rare occasion.

I haven't seen the Warren William Arsene Lupin film yet, how is he in that role? I've seen the Perry Masons--William is good, but the series itself never did settle down and decide what it wanted to be.

He's. Not. Lupin. That's about all I had to know. You'd think since he physically and emotionally fit Leblanc's conception of Lupin so well that MGM would cast him so, but noooooo, they give that part to Melvyn Douglas. Douglas may be a great many things, but Lupin he ain't. It's not a bad film, though, just kind of depressing for the missed opportunity, and William does well with the role he's handed, which at least lets him be an egomaniac.

As for the Masons, that's just what I like about the series! It's not another Boston Blackie or The Saint. You never can tell what the next one will look like. After all, Erle Stanley Gardner isn't a writer who should be treated with a great deal of respect. I like #2 the best, but also have a sneaking admiration for the burlesque of #3.

Well, yes...but I'm uplifted merely to know there is a Kay Francis Day! (Helps also to offset Elvis day.)

Oh well, as someone who's only had TCM for a little over a year, and doesn't have a small fortune to spend on Warner Archive releases, there are a bunch of treats for me. Maybe they should just call August "Catch-Up Month for Newbies."

I agree, more silents would have been nice though.

Slim pickings there. Myrna Loy and Lionel Barrymore (one each), and Lillian Gish. But if TCM has shown The Wind before. I missed it. I also want to catch The Mouthpiece.

Night Flight (1933) on TCM - Aug. 10

No, NIGHT FLIGHT has never been shown on TCM before. It did come out on DVD several months ago, but has not been on TV. So its TCM broadcast on August 10 will be its premiere.

Here's a review of Night Flight by DVD Savant. He points out it was also part of the 2011 TCM Classic Film Fest, which might be the reason why some think it has also aired on TCM.

This is a wonderful line up.
I wonder why, however, someone like Ronald Colman is regularly overlooked in star groupings like these. I know he hasn't remained in the public eye as well as some, but given his popularity and the films he appeared in I've always found it odd he doesn't receive more attention than he does.

It is great to see Kay Francis featured-too bad they aren't showing It's A Date-a charming and funny Deanna Durbin film with Kay as Deanna's glamourous actress mother-set on a cruise ship and in Hawaii!!!!!!. Why Turner doesn't release this title is beyond me! Why waste a day on Freddie Bartholomew???????

IT'S A DATE is a Universal Picture, so not in TCM's own vault of Warner, MGM, and RKO titles and far less likely to be in their library of licensed films than bigger-profile titles. As for Freddie Bartholomew, his films were largely for MGM, whose classic collection TCM owns, and the Selznick film of LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY has just come out on Blu-ray from Kino so their screening helps promote it. I see that the "Samurai" trilogy with Toshiro Mifune is also being featured (and I just ordered the new Criterion Blu-ray). There are several other Mifune films I've never seen, however, and I really ought to record RED BEARD, which is one of his best.

Actually IT'S A DATE is in TCM's "vault". MGM purchased the Universal feature when they remade it in 1949 as NANCY GOES TO RIO. So, for TV and video release, it's considered an MGM Picture, in a way.

What's funny is that Unversal had remade IT'S A DATE themselves in 1944 as CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK but apparently this was forgotten when MGM purchased what they must have thought was the only earlier version of the story.

I didn't know that. Thanks. And wow, three versions of the same movie in only nine years, and we complain today about too many remakes and sequels!
