Four "Three Mesquiteers" titles on Blu-ray in October!

PostWed Jul 04, 2012 1:06 am

For those interested in B-westerns and/or John Wayne, Olive FIlms will be releasing four individual "Three Mesquiteers" titles directed by George Sherman and starring John Wayne, Ray Corrigan, and Max Terhune to Blu-ray on October 2nd.

Titles are OVERLAND STAGE RAIDERS (1938), RED RIVER RANGE (1938), THE NIGHT RIDERS (1939), and THE THREE TEXAS STEERS (1939). Each is on its own disc with no bonus features, so fans will want to shop around for prices under $20 (most likely through importCDs.com) rather than paying list or Amazon prices. Olive has been quite aggressive lately in issuing a wide variety of obscure Paramount-licensed films to Blu-ray over the past several months, with a few more high-profile titles like HIGH NOON, JOHNNY GUITAR, and the 1956 INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS coming up this summer.

I am very about this new release. Cinecon ran a new restoration of Overland Stage Raiders a few years back and it was great to see. Now, 4 on Blu Ray.

I knew you'd see this and be excited! This is very cool, but they should have contacted you about DVD extras!

Sadly Olive Blu-ray releases, with a very few rare exceptions, are noted for having absolutely no extras beyond a main menu and chapter menu (which a few major studio distributors have actually been leaving off lately!). Still it will be great to have these available in HD and have hopes for a number of similar titles to show up on their rapidly growing catalog of niche-appeal vintage program pictures in the near future.

They recently released a bunch of early 1950s Paramount westerns to Blu-ray, and in addition to the titles I mentioned above will be coming out later this summer and fall with Blu-rays of RIO GRANDE, FORCE OF EVIL, BODY & SOUL, A DOUBLE LIFE, Orson Welles' MACBETH, CAPTAIN CAREY USA, CYRANO DE BERGERAC, and more! They're even doing a few foreign films, with TRAIN OF LIFE (1998) and THE MILK OF SORROW (2009) scheduled for October and the restored NOVOCENTO (1976) already available in a beautiful transfer.
