A new DVD edition of The Flying Deuces:

Just curious to know if it's based or not in the best 35mm elements found years ago.

It's missing several minutes of footage and the sound is off sync. Legend says they made an error and are going to reissue another DVD in the future.

Some Amazon comments:

Stick with the Kino DVD.

According to the reviews I could find, both the b&w and the colorized versions in the new Legend edition have issues.
Quality of colorization is OK but both the colorized and b/w versions of the film on this DVD are cut by several minutes.

Legend Films Inc. did a horrible job with this using their video transfers.
The only thing this has going for it is the color and the sound i thought were very good especially with the plane.
Quite a bit of important video footage missing, also dialog and sometime's the sound is out of sync with the picture.

(amazon reader reviews)

This clip from the Legend edition seems to confirm that the synchronization is poor (although that could be the fault of the uploader!)

The same guy who uploaded the clip has a comparison page in which the Stonevision release seems to come off best:

http://www.lordheath.com/index.php?p=1_524_The-Flying-Deuces-DVD

And he says much the same thing about the new release: "Restored special edition - has excellent picture quality on both prints but both are badly cut."

Maybe Flying Deuces is another case of various prints held by different owners who - for whatever reason - can't seem to come together to produce the best of all possible versions.

Strange, many people said the Kino was the best edition, restored from a new found 35mm material. Other informs said Lobster films did a restoration from the 35mm nitrate.

But this comparison show the Kino did not use not best footage source:

The colorized version... Uhnnn despite the low resolution video, appears that Legend Films finally managed to put color cheek, warmer cheeks, on human faces. It's not much clear in this video due the contrast original source (faces overbrightened) but I can see some warmer cheeks on one female. Warmer than the rest of the skin tones.

I ran my Legend copy last night. Please with the color and sound quality overall but yes there was missing footage, noticable splices and shaky scenes. And the synch was very much out.

Let's hope that Legend make right the copies we have all bought when or if the time comes.
