Forbidden Hollywood, Volume 4?

PostMon Jul 09, 2012 5:36 pm

In browsing the "Pre-Orders" section of the Warner Archive website, I saw Warners is advertising a Volume 4 of the "Forbidden Hollywood" series. It will include LAWYER MAN, JEWEL ROBBERY, MAN WANTED and THEY CALL IT SIN. The set is $40 and will supposedly ship on July 10th.

I know LAWYER MAN has run on TCM, not sure about the others. Also not sure about whether any of these have been restored, or are simply copied from "the best available video masters," as Warners often says. But the print quality of previous Forbidden Hollywood sets has been pretty good. And of course, the release of any pre-Code material is always welcome. SETH

All have been shown on TCM, but it's still great to see them on another DVD...esp. Jewel Robbery, very nearly my favorite non-musical.

There's also a Forbidden Hollywood Volume 5 in Pre-Orders which includes HARD TO HANDLE, MISS PINKERTON, THE MIND READER, and LADIES THEY TALK ABOUT. Talk about an embarrassment of riches!

Certainly not at Amazon yet for those two, and I have to use Amazon or a couple of others as WAC don't ship to my country any other for that matter. I really like They Called It Sin and have the LD collection with that in it and the others they did on LD.

Funny you should mention pre-codes. Yesterday I noticed in Classic Images that Fox is supposed to have released their own pre-code set last week. Anybody know anything about this? Has anybody actually seen the set in stores?

In addition to these Forbidden Hollywood sets, the Warner Archive is releasing on July 17 the Gary Cooper western "The Hanging Tree." For fans of this western, a long wait for a made on demand (read cheaply manufactured) DVD-R version of this great movie.

That's good news and an opportunity to plug Dorothy M. Johnson, who wrote the novellla the movie is based on. I think she's a great writer. Her other stories include The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and A Man Called Horse.

Good news on these if you prefer pressed discs (as I do): Lou Limerick's "New York Post" column has this to report:

"Warners' George Feltenstein told me these sets will initially be available as pressed DVD discs, at least until the initial limited run is exhausted and they're switched over to WAC's normal burned-on-demand DVD-R format."

Funny -- I don't remember seeing anything especially racy in LAWYER MAN (unless you count Wiliam Powell trying to mumble a word or two in Yiddish).

Other than the fact that the date of release preceeded the 1934 MPAA Code, what's especially noteworthy about this pre-Code film? It's certainly not in the same league as BABY FACE, that's for sure. SETH

I'm also cursed by living in Canada when it comes to getting Warner Archive releases (especially when they run specials), but lately I've had good luck (and decent prices) getting them from Oldies.com. I was ordering them from Deep Discount, but they can be slow to get WA releases up on their site, and often not in time for pre-orders. Oldies.com (Movies Unlimited is another one I sometimes use) are pretty good about it, I see they have these new Forbidden Hollywood collections listed for sale on Aug. 16 for $45 each.

It's annoying to me that I'll be repeating a title on each set from the Forbidden Hollywood laserdisc boxes, but I realize I'll be in a very tiny minority as far as that goes.

Maybe the bizarre conceit that any man could be blind to such a sugarplum as Joan Bombshell. Great picture, but an inane choice for inclusion in a "forbidden" collection.

Next time you're in Toronto, check out the Sunrise store on Yonge Street above Dundas. Their back room carries tonnes of pressed Warners Archives titles -- even the Torchy Blane series.
