LOST STOOGES FILM FOUND!

PostTue Jan 22, 2013 5:49 pm

I am happy to announce that The Vitaphone Project has located a complete Technicolor print of the long-lost Stooges 1933 MGM Colortone short HELLO POP! This is the only lost short with all three Stooges, and also stars Ted Healy and Henry Armetta. The 35mm nitrate print was found overseas and after some torturous steps to get the nitrate packaged and shipped, it is today safely in the hands of my friend Eric Aijayla at YCM labs. Ned Price at WB has ensured the funding of the restoration, and ideally we could see this within a year. The sole known print burned in the big MGM fire in the 1960's.

While I agree that JAILBIRDS OF PARADISE should be considered part of the Stooges' canon in the spirit, if not the letter of the law, STOP, SADIE, STOP is a bit of a stretch: It features none of The Three Stooges, and was never released anyway. CUCKOORANCHO would be a more legitimate contrivance, I think.

Any word on if a 35mm show-print will be made?

Yes Jack, it was given from us that a 35mm print be made and that once screened on the west coast it will be shown in the east.

Vitaphone, do you mind if I post this on my Facebook page for friends who are Stooge fans, but not film freaks like us?

Many devoted Stooges fans are also Ted Healy fans and consider his solo work to be just as important as the other solo Stooges' films. So it would be great if a print of STOP, SADIE, STOP could be found. And in my case, I'm also a big Cliff Edwards fan, so I'd be all the more interested to see it.
In a way, though, I almost feel I have seen it - I have the cutting continuity script, some stills, the music cue sheet, and a trade paper review.
There's really not much to the short - it's apparently only 12 minutes or so and much of it is taken up by the re-use of the "Singin' In the Rain" number by Cliff Edwards from THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929. The rest is a "Sadie Thompson"/ "Rain" spoof with Cliff Edwards in drag.

After posting this news on my Facebook page an hour or so ago, it's amazing the response I've gotten from Stooge fans who aren't in the N'Ville realm. People just can't believe a film this old could suddenly be found. Then, I have to explain how this could be in color after all the Stooge films they're used to seeing are in black and white. It's always amazing when film preservation crosses over into popular taste. I haven't heard this much hubbub since the Metropolis discovery a few years ago.

Wonderful to hear, Bob! We should know soon how much work HELLO POP will require, but all the right people are involved so it will be the best outcome ever. Should have a few frame blowups in a week or two.

The first still wasn't much - but in the second one Cliff Edwards looks too plausible to be comfortable.
