Harold Lockwood

PostWed Aug 15, 2012 11:29 am

Does anyone know if there has been a biography published on Lockwood? Not a book, necessarily, but a article in a journal, something more detailed than the usual capsule 2-para bios appearing in various film encyclopedias. I've searched, haven't found anything.

Yes, a short biography was published by Duct Publishing 22 August of 2011, 84 pages in length, simply called Harold Lockwood, written by Jerold Angelus. It's available through Barnes and Noble for $49.

This is one of those "Wikipedia books" that collate online articles and are sold for prices considerably beyond their actual worth. They're printed on demand and packaged with a generic cover.

(No, I'm not speaking from experience.)

I doubt I would have paid that much for it anyway! I'm fascinated with the whole idea of "wikipedia" histories. You can publish a book on (insert subject matter here) derived totally from wikipedia articles...and then wikipedia will accept your book as a reliable source for their online articles! It's too perfect.

I've checked Worldcat (there's a water resources scientist named Harold Lockwood, so I got a lot of rather surprising hits), but didn't see anything. I don't know if there's been anything been published on Lockwood in Classic Images or any of the more scholarly publications. I should probably check JSTOR.

Doesn't Tony Slide have something in his Silent Players book? You can probably find articles/interviews in him in Media HIstory Digital Project magazines like MPW, etc.

Yes, and I think Eve Golden has one in one of her books, too, but those are the capsule 2-para bios I was talking about--I was looking for something with more detail and analysis. I've found a few interview-type articles with Lockwood, but they're puff pieces. It's not critical to my health and well-being, I'm just curious. He was a popular star in the late 'teens.

One place that should always be checked for this type of material is "Silent Film Performers: An Annotated Bibliography..." by Roy Liebman. It indicates that there was a Films in Review article in May 1971, and also Classic Film Collector in Fall 1976.

Thank you very much! (Don't have Silent Film Performers...)

There is a 10 page chapter on Lockwood (and May Allison) in FROM HOLLYWOOD by DeWitt Bodeen (Barnes/Tantivy 1976). I believe it's the 1971 Films in Review article. Amazing how very little of Lockwood's work remains, for such a prolific actor.

most of the info is indeed piecemeal on Lockwood. The usual info on him may be in conjunction with May Allison or something on Metro Studios. Or film celebrities who died in the Influenza Pandemic. A web article on Allison has a rare photo of Lockwood(with his signature) and also talks about Allison's husband James Quirk.

And now for the $64K question--are any of his surviving films available on dvd? I thought that had been discussed here previously, but I can't find it if we did. I know his survival rate is terrible, I think there's only 5-6 of his films still extant.

"The Ball Player and the Bandit", a 1912 Broncho 1-reeler, is on Kino's "Reel Baseball" compilation. Tess of the Storm Country (1914) is probably floating around as well.

The film from 1911, LOST ILLUSIONS, for Rex, is one of his first. This one, A BRAVE LITTLE LADY, is for Nestor. (Also known as A BRAVE LITTLE WOMAN).

Is this the 1914 version with Lockwood? I thought this was the later version. Or does it include both? If so, there is a purchase in my immediate future!

Uh-oh, is my face red...

I'm sorry Frederica, I saw that the description mentioned the 1914 film and neglected to read the fine print. DOH! I obviously don't have this DVD, nor have I seen either version of the film, but I'd sure like to!

Perhaps Milestone will see fit to re-release TESS on Blu-ray and include both versions...until then, at least we've got the Archive for the 1914. Thanks for the link. I shall have to get 'round to watching that sometime soon, methinks.

I've got the DVD of the remake and like it quite a bit, but like the 1914 version at least as much if not more, as while it may be a bit more primitive stylistically, it seems to have just a bit of a harder edge to it dramatically. I'd love to see both versions come out together in a Blu-ray edition.
