Run, Girl Run

PostSat Sep 29, 2012 1:36 pm

Perhaps this has been asked before -- a search on the title turned up too many results to be culled for the answer efficiently. But I had not seen Run, Girl Run before the other night (on TCM) and I note that the titles in the restoration retained credits for Technicolor, but the film itself is in monochrome. Am I right in assuming that there is no color element for this picture? And is Campus Vamp the only Sennett-Lombard picture to come down to us with the Sennett Color?

thanks in advance,

This title was available from Videobrary. There ws also very bad color -- the sort where the Technicolor elements get warped and blotchy.

The technicolor insert for RUN GIRL RUN apparently does not exist, and well, I guess you didn't see the restored MATCHMAKING MAMAS with all it's Technicolor bits that ran soon after since you asked if only THE CAMPUS VAMP survives with color. the color sequences also survive for LOVE AT FIRST FLIGHT,THE CAMPUS CARMEN, THE SWIM PRINCESS, and at least two Sennett color talkie shorts survive, THE BLUFFER and MOVIETOWN.

Thank you, Richard, for the heads up on all of these things. No, I missed Matchmaking Mamas, to my regret. Could some of the missing color sequences be rebuilt somehow out of the monochrome? I note numerous "two-strip technicolor" programs on the web, but these seem to subtract hues from full-color clips -- not what would be needed.

What's needed is the actual sequence, which in RUN GIRL RUN's case does not survive, in color or otherwise.

It was great to see Run, Girl, Run (1928) for the first time in years; I think this is probably Lombard's most-seen Sennett film by fans given it was released on Super 8/8mm during the 1970's. And wonderful to see Smith's Pony (1927), His Unlucky Night (1928), The Best Man (1928), and Matchmaking Mammas (1929) for the first time!

I have seen The Campus Carmen (1928) in the past and was aware that The Swim Princess (1928) and The Campus Vamp (1928) also still existed; great to hear the color sequences survive as well and hopefully these will all be on the eventual dvd collection, my question is what is the survival status of the other Lombard movies for Sennett:

Gold Digger of Weepah (1927)
The Girl from Everywhere (1927)
The Girl from Nowhere (1928)
The Beach Club (1928)
The Bicycle Flirt (1928)
Motorboat Mamas (1928)
Hubby's Weekend Trip (1928)
Smith's Army Life (1928)
Smith's Restaurant (1928)
Don't Get Jealous (1929)

I have prints of THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE, THE BEACH CLUB, MOTORBOAT MAMAS, and SMITH'S ARMY LIFE, and I think THE BEACH CLUB may be on the Cinemuseum DVD.

Hi all, I might add that two other talkie shorts in Sennett-Color survive: Take Your Medicine and Strange Birds, both from 1930. However, it comes as a wonderful surprise to me to read that the Technicolor elements from The Swim Princess survive. Do you have more details on that, Richard? I would be very grateful for info you can share. Thanks, Hilde
