Kevin Brownlow Interview 2012

PostThu Oct 04, 2012 7:41 pm

Back in February I had the honor of interviewing Kevin Brownlow after his "Those Surprising Silents" talk at The Strand Hotel, Limerck, Ireland.
Here is the link to the video on youtube for anyone interested. It is best viewed in 1080p full screen.

:? Very interesting piece. Unfortunately, the way this is cut it is hard to tell what films he is talking about after each quick edit. HEARTS OF THE WORLD is obviously one of them. Though how many casual fans would you expect to know that? I did not know myself that the European release was completely different from domestic. What film is the one he says has been the most popular Photoplay has presented? THE BIG PARADE, THE CROWD, THE WIND? Do you know?

Warner's has promised all 10 titles for so many years? I'm assuming that includes THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE? Even though technically it is Public-Domain.

Thanks for the feeback. I do understand what you mean.
Casual fans may not quite catch that mention of Hearts of the world for sure.
He is mentioning The Wind before Warner Bros. He says "As you say with the Wind".
It was my first interview that I cut myself out so I tried my best.
I may re-edit with some titles or perhaps add annotations to this video.

FASCINATING!! I wouldn't mind at all seeing you interview him, hearing your questions, and so forth. Had no idea there were several cuts of "Hearts of the World". The fact that "The Wind" shows more popularly than "Napoleon" shouldn't be surprising, either: for one thing, it's a tad shorter... Nicely done, though, and really glad to have the opportunity to hear this: thank you!

For another thing; "Napoleon" was a disaster, having a terrible premiere only to be followed by a hatchet job. Thanks to the continuing life-long effort by Kevin Brownlow, we are the first generation to be able to see what Gance had intended. "The Wind" never had this problem.
