Do These 2 Silents Survive?

PostWed Oct 10, 2012 9:41 am

A friend sent me photos of Chicago movie palaces from the February 26 Tribune there, Sorry I
can,t forward them but my question:
1.The Central Park Theater, supposedly the first air conditioned movie theatre, has marquee with
Betty Compson and Conway Tearle in "The Rustle Of Silk," 1923 Paramount
2. The Tivoli Theater has "A Slave Of Fashion," 1925 MGM with Norma Shearer, though the
marquee calls it "Slaves Of Fashion."
Does either one of these still exist?
Amusingly, the Uptown Theatre marquee from its opening in 1925 boasts of its architecture and number
of seats but doesn,t say what,s playing!

I just checked the FIAF database, but unfortunately didn't get any hits for either film. (And I tried the second one under both "A Slave" and "Slaves," but even so, nothing turned up.) That doesn't necessarily mean that they don't exist, but it does mean that none of the major film archives have listed either one among their holdings.

A Slave of Fashion is definitely lost. It has appeared on Jon Mirsalis' lists of lost films. I can't find any discussion of The Rustle of Silk in either alt.movies.silent or Nitrateville.

Yet A Slave of Fashion has 29 votes on IMDb.

The Rustle of Silk has none.

:? If they want a rare Betty Compson film on the program, how about THE ENEMY SEX? This one seems to survive, and reviews of the day called it her best picture since THE MIRACLE MAN.

Go ahead. I was being slightly sarcastic that there could be 29 votes for a film no one can have seen.

They certainly don't rate it highly.
