THE UNKNOWN a New Transfer? LE GONG Premiere?

PostMon Oct 15, 2012 12:30 am

:? OK, how come no one mentioned here or anyplace that LE GONG-DANCE OF THE VIRGINS was debuting on TCM tonight? And in Two-Color Technicolor no less? And this was from Milestone? In addition, that sure didn't look like the same murky old transfer of THE UNKNOWN that TCM has aired numerous times in the past?

Oh by the way, any information on where the near pristine print of THE RED DANCE came from that France 3 debuted back in July? I've obtained a recording. The piano score is quite good, though the film needs an Orchestra. Really a stunning transfer. Now if we could get one of FAZIL that even nearly looks this good.

Legong has played on TCM before. It was shown on June 23, 2010 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Milestone films (I just looked that up to make sure). Perhaps you missed it because it "slipped under the radar" - 1935 doesn't exactly scream silent you know.

I didn't even know it was playing last night until we woke up with all these orders for it on our website (did Gay Desperado also play recently? We've had a run on those...), but it's definitely true it premiered on our Milestone tribute in 2010. As a gift to us, TCM let us select one film from our collection to program ourselves. Since we thought (and still do) that LEGONG is one of our best and least-known treasures and that we started Milestone with our Age of Exploration series that is still ongoing, that was our choice. It's not only a lovely film with a moving storyline, but the depiction of Balinese dance and customs in 2-color Technicolor is simply incredible. Every dance teacher in the world should show this film to their students.

And a tribute to Evil (not) Bob, Schlesinger and the rest of the crew -- I saw it first at Cinecon a century ago.

Dennis,

:? Glad you got some Fresh orders. I would have ordered too if I didn't still have the issue with my Paypal account. I seem to recall the Milestone tribute on TCM a couple years back, but do not remember anything about LE GONG being shown.
