In 1923 Mabel Normand was busy working on
The Extra Girl, which will air on TCM Thursday (September 20) as part of the 100th Anniversary of Keystone (thanks to Paul and CineMuseum).
Betty Coss was Mabel secretary and over the last few years the photos from Betty’s collection have been auctioned and re-sold and auctioned again. One of the photos I find extremely interesting is the candid photo Betty took of Mabel with Dick Jones during a brake in filming The Extra Girl. I think of Dick as Mabel’s director. Expect for Tillie’s Punctured Romance (1914); he directed all of her Sennett features including
Mickey (MNFFC 1918) also screening on Thursday. So you can see for yourself their collaboration; their relationship was very close and the candid picture taken of his holding her, symbolizes this. Often in photos of the two of them, I find him with a soft rather indulgent smile as if she has just said or did something he found amusing and endearing.

Dick is credited with directing over 45 films for Sennett, who had him named supervising director in 1918 after he had completed Mickey. Dick became responsible for superviding the editing, assigning actors, directors and writers. At Looking for Mabel is some general information about F. Richard (Dick) Jones.
