Jon Boorstin knows Who Created The Tramp, maybe

PostSun Jul 29, 2012 12:45 am

Jon Boorstin loves Mabel and he is working on his 4th historical fiction. This one is set in Edendale with Keystone as the background and of course Mabel is going to be a character, how could she not be, take a look at the picture of him I found at Los Angeles Review of Book, Mabel is definitely part of Jon’s life… If the writing he did in his essay, on Chaplin and who created the Tramp, is as good, his book is one I am looking forward to reading… (soon). (the link to his essay is at Looking for Mabel's in her Log)

MABEL NORMAND | Silent-film star deserved to be heard
Immortality achieved in black and white

There are references to a number of people I admire and I don’t mean just the silent personalities that Rudy Cecera has written about that ‘played’ with Mabel Normand but others, like Paul Gierucki; Rob Foster; Jon Boorstin; Tom Meyers of the Fort Lee Film Commission; people at TCM; Rob Stone & Jenny Paxson from the Library of Congress…What a wonderful circle of people that form around our Mabel! oh, yes did I include: Mack Sennett, Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe Arbuckle and me!

Sam & Mabel came together

PostTue Aug 07, 2012 10:23 pm

Did Mabel Normand sign with Samuel Goldwyn in 1916 or 1917? There is an article in Motography which reported it was done while she was making MICKEY, odd if true.

Mabel Normand loved the “sweet science”: Jack Dempsey and more. 2012 was the first time women could compete in the Olympics

When Doctors Disagree photo

PostFri Aug 10, 2012 11:00 pm

When Doctors Disagree is a Samuel Goldwyn films that Mabel Normand made in 1919 which is sitting in a Belgium Archive in rather good condition but sadly a copy has not been sent back to the country of origin. A few years ago I posted about it and in today’s mail came a picture of Mabel on the train. I added to photo to the When Doctor’s Disagree page at Looking for Mabel . http://looking-for-mabel.webs.com/whendoctorsdisagree.htm

SPARC BOOK SIGNING

PostWed Aug 22, 2012 8:37 pm

(OFF TOPIC) There was a book signing at Venice Beach last night and a few pictures are at Looking for Mabel. Delores Hanney & Patricia Nolan Stein plus Marc Wanamaker and Karie Bible were there (Karie will need to explain how she was found in a jail cell during the evening, herself!) All and all a lovely evening remembering Ray Bradbury.

Mabel found in "On His Wedding Day"

PostWed Sep 12, 2012 7:44 pm

The joy of research is finding new stuff! We never know everything, so we hunt. We now need to add another movie to Mabel’s filmography. Another Keystone comedy has been added to Mabel Normand film list, ON HIS WEDDING DAY. http://looking-for-mabel.webs.com/onhisweddingday.htm

The Extra Girl & Mickey director Dick Jones

PostMon Sep 17, 2012 2:39 pm

In 1923 Mabel Normand was busy working on The Extra Girl, which will air on TCM Thursday (September 20) as part of the 100th Anniversary of Keystone (thanks to Paul and CineMuseum).
Betty Coss was Mabel secretary and over the last few years the photos from Betty’s collection have been auctioned and re-sold and auctioned again. One of the photos I find extremely interesting is the candid photo Betty took of Mabel with Dick Jones during a brake in filming The Extra Girl. I think of Dick as Mabel’s director. Expect for Tillie’s Punctured Romance (1914); he directed all of her Sennett features including Mickey (MNFFC 1918) also screening on Thursday. So you can see for yourself their collaboration; their relationship was very close and the candid picture taken of his holding her, symbolizes this. Often in photos of the two of them, I find him with a soft rather indulgent smile as if she has just said or did something he found amusing and endearing.

Dick is credited with directing over 45 films for Sennett, who had him named supervising director in 1918 after he had completed Mickey. Dick became responsible for superviding the editing, assigning actors, directors and writers. At Looking for Mabel is some general information about F. Richard (Dick) Jones. http://looking-for-mabel.webs.com/jones.htm

Mabel Normand had an Indian while in Culver City working at the Goldwyn Studios, (before returning to Sennett) in 1921. What fun, the picture of her kick starting her bike was sent to us by Bruce Long. It was one I had not seen before so I just had to add it to the 2008 article I did on “Mabel, the motor cycle girl”. Re: MICKEY & THE EXTRA GIRL ON TCM

PostTue Sep 18, 2012 4:21 pm

“Hey Marilyn! Wanted to give you a quick heads up: We will have two version of MICKEY on the DVD – the standard seven reel version (with new titles and inter-titles) and an alternate version taken from 35mm nitrate materials and various other prints provided by your kind self, David Shepard and several others. Because of the amount of work and clean up time required for the “alternate” version, and the broadcast deadlines so tight, TCM will be airing the standard seven reel version and the alternate cut shall be exclusive to the DVD. However, we have provided you with a Special Thanks on both versions – it is the least we could do for all of your wonderful support and efforts to preserve Mabel’s memory.

GV DESIGNS

PostTue Oct 30, 2012 12:23 am

Mabel Normand was the muse for the graphic designer, Manuel Lopez of GV Designs. He has created by reworking some of the well known images of Mabel and using some nice effects a new way to see her; he posted them on FaceBook and has allowed me to post them at Looking for Mabel. I put them in their very own album; in hopes that over time perhaps he will open his Photoshop program and reformat other pictures and share them with us. So far he has done one Hal Roach’s Raggedy Rose and two from Samuel Goldwyn publicity.
