TEXAS GUINAN

PostThu Jul 05, 2012 1:34 pm

Watched Incendiary Blonde starring Betty Hutton last night. Do any of Texas Guinan's silent films exist?

She is credited with discovering both Ruby Keeler and George Raft, who appeared at her Broadway nightclub. A pity Guinan's Queen of the Nightclubs is among the lost.

I've got "The White Squaw" (1920) on an old VHS tape. It's okay...

Keeler was a teenage dancer in Guinan's club before it was padlocked. Ruby even got a positive notice in The New Yorker back then! Standards must have been different.

LOL... Imagine my surprise when I read that Broadway Thru a Keyhole is actually the story of Ruby Keeler and Al Jolson as played by Constance Cummings and Russ Columbo!

We showed Girl of the Rancho with some other Westerns here in Louisville -- a fine little action film, with the casual racism you might expect from a short Western action film, but enjoyable on its terms.

This is interesting. Grapevine sold a bad (VHS ?) copy of The White Squaw years ago but that's not the correct film. In 1929, the film was mislabeled and is actually A Moonshine Feud. Melody Productions repackaged 13 of Guinan's 2-reelers as 1-reelers with sound effects and dialog intros. At that time they mislabeled this film. This was about the time of Queen of the Night Clubs was released as an all-talkie.
