Gee, too bad she didn't get to see the sound print that F. Gwynplaine MacIntyre reviewed.

Note: the article includes a link to a Soundcloud page with audio from three of the sound discs. Doesn't seem like the link reached Minffordd, North Wales.

Ron Hutchinson apparently has the complete sound disks.

Correct. And there is quite a bit of talking and Haines comes across as very comfortable with sound.

This picture has always intrigued me.

Back in the late 1970's I was doing a heck of a lot of research in an endeavour to save a wonderful picture palace in Melbourne (Oz). The Regent (the object of my affection) was originally planned to have a cabaret underneath, but because of stringent liquour laws in 1929, the cabaret was turned into a cinema. (You could tell what it was originally supposed to be, because the auditorium had two very wide promenades on either side.) This cinema, The Plaza, opened as a "talkie house" - whilst most programming in city cinemas was still with silents - and the occasional talking picture. The first picture at the new Plaza was "Alias, Jimmy Valentine" and there were a number of interesting articles about it in the papers of the time. Apparently it did quite good box office when it played too.

Although the film was lost I did find a 78 gramophone record of the song "Look out, look out for Jimmy Valentine" - which according to the label was from the film. (I don't know whether for sure if it was included in the film or the music of it may have been included on the title sequence - maybe Ron can solve this mystery?)

So, after writing all the above rubbish - I would indeed be very interested in seeing this picture even if it is a cut down version.

The article names David Wyatt as the owner of the cut-down print. Does anyone know him? The name doesn't seem familiar to be at all. Is he a BFI person?

Donald, my Vitaphone disks have music and sound effects for most reels, at least two all dialog. the song is used just for the opening titles. No musical number or singing.

Thanks for the info Ron. Good to know that the record label was correct and that the song was included - as a backing to the main title. One day, maybe, perhaps, possibly - the complete film may be found. (Stranger things have happened. It's probably in the same place as "London After Midnight")

As I said in an earlier thread about those sound disks, I enjoy listening to Barrymore having an odd hysterical fit as he confronts Haines. For years I've heard on and off rumours that this film survived, or didn't. Glad to see we can at least get an impression of it. Of course, it's historically significant as the first MGM film with some sound, and who doesn't love seeing Karl Dane?

Funnily enough Jim, I still have ALL my 78's! Finding this particular one might prove a tad difficult as I haven't sorted them into any order when I shifted into my current abode four years back. :(

Ed, you can access the discs through the film's Wikipedia page.
The short the article mentions, VOICES ACROSS THE SEA: I've always wondered, does that still exist?

So does VOICES ACROSS THE SEA, mentioned in the article, still exist?
