Theda Bara photos - Please help

PostMon Jan 26, 2009 8:05 pm

This is my first posting, so I apologize in advance if this doesn't work right. I have two photos of Theda Bara and wonder if anyone can tell me which film they're from:

Image

Eve Golden says that the actor in the first is Albert Roscoe, which narrows the choices to "The She-Devil," "Under The Yoke," "The Siren's Song" or "When A Woman Sins." Unfortunately, my Google skills aren't good enough to definitively identify either picture, so I hope someone will recognize them.

That should work. Im not really familiar with her stills so I have no clue. Maybe Bob Birchard would know (seems his area of expertise ;))

I think I would eliminate Under the Yoke from your list since all the stills I have seen of Theda Bara from this film show her wearing Spanish style clothing.

Thank you both, Hala (for fixing my pictures, thanks!) and Peter. From the synopses I've read, I'd put my money on "When A Woman Sins," but, again, I really don't know. One of the difficulties with buying repro stills is that unless they're from one of her really "popular" films, such as 'Cleopatra' or 'Salome,' they're just on the market as "Theda Bara."

But I thank you both, and hope someone will recognize the stills!

Since most of Theda Bara's films are lost (or just misplaced, I hope) we only have stills, lobby cads and posters to identify them with. You really need to do some detective work and compare them with others to see if the clothing or scenery matches. There are also vast quantities of publicity pictures that are not from any of her films.
I still have not identified the clip from the French documentary on Theda Bara. I had 2 experts look at it and neither one could say for sure what film it is from although one thought that it is most likely from The Soul of Buddha.

In the photo of Bara touching the man's face, the man appears to be comedian Glenn Tryon. He starred in two-reelers and a couple of features for the Hal Roach studio in the mid 1920s. Bara starred in the Hal Roach two-reeler MADAME MYSTERY (4/18/1926), so this may be a candid shot on the Roach lot from that time.

She does look older in these photos. And it looks like a non vamp role which should help narrow it down since well...she did so few. But I almost doubt its from that late (the Roach period). Maybe its one of the later 1918 films? As someone said above with these films being 'misplaced' (thats optimistic LOL) its hard to know sometimes. Im bad with stills anyways :p. However I got that Vilma Banky one the other day so Im pretty happy about that :)

Of the NY Public Library stills, the first is particularly weird because the set is in sharp focus and Theda is outta focus. Am obvious photogapher's mistake, I'm surprised that one wasn't immediately destroyed.

Hala, in regards to resizing photos you may wish to try a program like Irfan View.

It's freeware and it will resize your graphics files quite well.

I wasn't expecting this thread to be active again, but - I happened to be watching The Woman With the Hungry Eyes, and saw that the photo of Bara in the gown is listed as being from When A Woman Sins.

And ebay currently is selling a repro still from WAWS, and you can recognize the clothing there, as well, so I will take those two as being a definite identification. Thanks to everyone who tried to help me.

BTW, thanks for the NYPL Cleopatra photos link - wonderful stuff; just what I need for my next book!

Hey, Barafan. I was wondering about "The Woman With The Hungry Eyes". Has it been released on DVD? I can never find it.

No, it has not been released yet. It's a shame because it is a terrific documentary. And Hugh Monroe Neely wanted to release most of Theda surviving films along with it on DVD.

BTW, we have her personal photo scrapbooks at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts which are currently being restored and preserved. They chronicle her Fox features of the 'teens. The CLEOPATRA photos that are on our online digital gallery may be from these, or from our regular photo files.

I hope so - around the time that Eve Golden did her Bara biography, she said the scrapbooks were in terrible shape and getting worse. I do hope they digitise them!

FYI - I have about 125 old Bara newspaper clippings, but there is no way to upload pics here, is there?

No, Nitrateville does not have it's on webspace file server. You have to upload the photos to your own webserver or to a photo hosting site like flicker.

This is a scene from Fox's 1918 production of "When A Woman Sins."

Hmm - I've never seen this one before. It almost looks like a screenshot rather than a posed photo. It could be anything. Where did you get it?

Someone sent it to me a while back asking if I could identify it and claimed it IS a screenshot from a film they found. Unlikely story, but I still haven't been able to identify it or pin it to any of her movies.

It's possible, then, that it might be from 1916's East Lynne, but I can't say for sure. Unless someone else chimes in before me, I'll screen my copy over the weekend and let you know.
