Stagecoach, which includes the 1917 Ford Silent Bucking Broadway, is 52% off at amazon (along with a number of other Criterion titles):

I noticed yesterday that Kino had added volume 2 of the avant-garde series to its $9.99 list. I wasn't that crazy about volume 1 but I did watch it with a lot of respect and what you might call "one-time interest" (meaning I don't care to watch most of the films a second time, but am glad to have watched them once).

I hesitate to order volume 2 because it covers mostly talkie years, and Kino doesn't caption its DVDs. Can anyone tell me if there are indeed a lot of yakkety-yaks among the films on volume 2?

They also have a nice early Clara Bow double on special - Down To The Sea in Ships along with Parisian Love.

Don't know if anyone else has noticed this yet, but Blu-ray.com indicates that Amazon's price on Paramount's Blu-ray of WINGS (1927) dropped yesterday from about $20-21 down to $16.49. (Their page for the film is at http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Wings-Blu-ray/33615/ ) This is a fine-looking restoration, including the old Gaylord Carter pipe organ score and the newly reconstructed Zamecnik orchestra score with spectacular yet nevertheless period sound effects mixed in as done during the original screenings. For those with a big screen and good sound system this may be the film to introduce silents to those who've never seen them (or have only seen THE ARTIST).

Deep Discount's semi-annual 25% off their already discounted price sale ends Saturday. The discount doesn't apply to many of our favorite silent niche labels, but it does seem to apply to most Kino titles, making the discount effectively half-off. Www.deepdiscount.com

Hmm, i must not be doing this right. It says enter coupon code at checkout, but at checkout you get a box for "promotional code" which i would assume is the same thing. But when i enter the code they gave the amount is never updated. Is it discounted already when it goes to your cart? It sounds like it wouldn't be. I tried various spacing and capitalization options.

The sale has been extended to June 30th. However, I couldn't get the code to work either. Maybe the items are discounted already. The Kino titles don't have the red symbol so it shouldn't work for them anyhow.

Warner Archive has their silent titles on sale for 30% off (a few lower-priced ones for 20%). Also, if you use coupon code DEALS10 you save $10 off $50. Plus you get free standard shipping (some kind of "staycation" promotion they automatically give you). I just ordered four titles using the DEALS10 code, plus got the free shipping. My total was $49.28. Not a bad deal at all!

A couple of things:

1) Barnes & Noble's 50% off Criterion sale is 60% off for B&N members.

2) Costco, at least around here, has the Masters of Slapstick set. I don't remember the price exactly but probably around $11, which is more than Amazon at the moment but still good (and instant).

A lot of seasonal sales going on right now - at Deep Discount Keaton Blu-rays are about 60% off, as well as the Milestone Charley Chase DVD at $18.81. Barnes and Noble has the Criterion catalog at 50% off. Warner Archives is having one of their 5 for $50 sale. Any others I'm not aware of?

On a separate thread we announced Grapevine Video's Black Friday sale that I think ends tonight. It's 25% off for one dvd, 33% off for three and more. I suggest that purchasers add PNAS at the Customer Code prompt to get another $2.00 off per dvd.

I thought that the Grapevine sale went until tonight (Monday).
I PUT MY ORDER IN LAST NIGHT. I have been having computer problems, so I didn't want to risk waiting until the last minute & not being able to access the site.

I saw the PNAS offer. I wanted to put it in & save $, but I don't belong to the Pola Negri Appreciation Society.
Since this isn't a big corporate thing, but a father & son doing this, I wasn't comfortable claiming discounts that I didn't deserve.

If they had a discount to something to which I belong, I would most certainly use it.
In this case, I qualified for the 33% off, & I made the most of that!

Upon re-reading my post, I realize it did not sound as intended.
Thanks Bob for the savings code. I did not mean to sound as if I was putting down coupon users.
I was there ordering all the stuff @ 33% off that I never sprang for @ full price!
I just noted that I didn't qualify for the additional discount.

Any who do, please use it.

The rest of you feel free to join me @ 33% off!

Agnes,

I couldn't use the PNAS code either with things I ordered yesterday. I'm not surprised given Grapevine's policy of allowing only one discount at a time. I just don't know if they have discontinued it entirely.

Now that the Black Friday sale is over, I find that the PNAS code works to get $2.00 off each dvd ordered. As mentioned earlier, PNAS stands for Pola Negri Appreciation Society and its web page is excellent. You can't "join" the PNAS but, as a blogmeister myself, I can say that the best way of saying Thank You for this discount is to visit this site:

I thought that I got enough out of the ##% off ( and I diddn't belong to PNAS, though some here surely do).

I went a little overboard! kid in candy store ......WITH 335 OFF!

Yeah, that is why I need somewhere to hide when the credit card bill comes ( & Hubby checks it on line all the time, so I need a hiding place fast!)

Just a suggestion, Agnes, but Grapevine has one of Houdini's films available. Perhaps the famous escape artist might suggest a way of "disappearing" from your spouse's scrutiny
