Hi everyone,

I noticed that Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection is on sale for $64 off. I own the UK set...but is there any difference with this set? It is now $35.99.

I don't have the new US L&H set, but from all the reviews I've read (e.g. Amazon) its main differences seem to be:
1) no silents in the new set (unlike Europe, owned by different rights holders) - or colorizations
2) English subtitles now on the foreign-language versions
3) generally improved - though not fully restored or cleaned-up - print/transfer quality
4) streamliner version of A Chump at Oxford included
5) potentially problematic book-style packaging (some reports of glue stuck to playing surfaces, and scratched discs)

I've also read that a couple of shorts (Hog Wild?) are slightly "stretched" to the wrong aspect ratio, and quality on a few titles is disappointing (e.g. Sons of the Desert) but there seems a consensus that generally it's better than the UK edition for the talkies, and obviously there's no PAL speed-up.

There are also commentary tracks on this set, which is not true of the European releases.

I have all the Kinowelt discs, and the UK set, but I just placed an order for this when I saw that great J&R price.

This should be posted in the Talkie deals page, I will put a link there if anyone else doesn't!

Got my lastest Kino e-mail with the subject title "After-Christmas DVD Blu-ray Sale, 60% Off Entire Collection". :D OK, I thought to myself, now is the time to replace all those Keaton DVDs with Blu-Ray. Then, when I went to the sale, it was only 40% off. :(

Unseen Cinema - Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941

It's been a little lower in the past on Amazon, but that was a long time ago.

Right now it's just over 50 percent off at $49.49:

http://www.amazon.com/Unseen-Cinema-Ear ... B000AYEIJA" target="_blank

Product Description
7 DVDs – 20 Hours - 155 Classics of Avant Garde Cinema! "Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film 1894-1941" reveals hitherto unknown accomplishments of American filmmakers working in the United States and abroad from the invention of cinema until World War II, and offers an innovative and often controversial view of experimental film as a product of avant-garde artists, of professional directors, and of amateur movie-makers working collectively and as individuals at all levels of film production. Many of the films have not been available since their creation, some have never been screened in public, and almost all have been unavailable in copies as good as these until now. Sixty of the world's leading film archive collections cooperated with Anthology Film Archives to bring this long-neglected period of film history back to life for modern audiences.

More details at the link above and elsewhere on the net.

The rights on UNSEEN CINEMA expire in a few months, so if you have any interest in it, the present amazon.com deal is a great opportunity before the set becomes the province of the scalpers. The set contains material licensed from major studios and the likelihood of renewal is basically zero.

I believe the UK Lloyd set is now out-of-print (no major UK e-tailer is selling it directly at any price). The £8 Amazon price before Christmas was obviously to clear the remaining copies.

Not true; it's the sound version of WELCOME DANGER that's on the UK set; the "silent" version (not really the actual originally filmed unreleased silent version, which is lost; this is a conversion of the largely-reshot sound version to silent) continues to be MIA on home video. The US set, of course, has no WELCOME DANGER at all. I've got the sound version recorded from TCM, but I couldn't make it through more than ten minutes. It's awful. I hope that the "silent" version plays better, if I can ever find a copy.

$5 off using the code ENJOY5 on anything at deepdiscount.com. Shipping is free!!!

Finally picked up Fantomas!!! for $15.90. You could also get Wings (for $16.18) on Blu-ray pretty cheap as well! (Note: I paid sales tax, but probably others will get lucky and not have to pay sales tax and thus a dollar cheaper)

I already own a lot of the silents but never could find "Othello", so happy it was part of this sale. I was debating on getting the Marlene Dietrich documentary though...
