James Cagney & the REAL George M. Cohan - Live!

PostSun Jul 01, 2012 9:53 am

Please visit our new post at OLD HOLLYWOOD IN COLOR as we celebrate the Fourth of July with a visit to YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (1942). You can hear the complete half-hour radio version featuring most of the original cast from the film. Then listen to the real George M. Cohan performing at Carnegie Hall in 1939 singing "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy." We top off this post with Enrico Caruso singing his rendition of Cohan's "Over There."

Beautiful Website thank you Bob! and one of my favorite musicals, it's great to see it in color. In New York, back in the 50's-60's there was a tv show called Million Dollar Movie. They would play the same film each night all week and twice on Saturdays/ King Kong and Yankee Doodle Dandy were played repeatedly. I can safely say that I've seen Yankee Doodle Dandy more than any other musical as I watched it whenever I could. Cagney was transcendent. We all wanted to dance like Cagney did in that movie. We tried and failed to run up a wall and back flip like Cagney did. And those stiff legged dance moves, really terrific.

Rico,

Yes I too was a big fan of Million Dollar Movie on WOR Channel 9. I watched DANDY and KONG so many times that I had to avoid them for years before I ventured to see them again. I was about 8 yrs old and in the 3rd grade when DANDY first aired. My class was so impressed by DANDY that we convinced the music teacher to let us perform a Cohan review as our part in the annual school play that all the grades participated in. I recall the first song we opened up with was "There's No Business Like Show Business" - by Irving Berlin! After that we sang only Cohan songs.

Thanks for your kind words and for stopping by OHIC.
