Three Stooges in color in 1938

PostTue Dec 19, 2017 12:52 pm

Here's a really short film of the Stooges in Atlantic City in 1938. Clip includes a shirtless Larry Fine!

The couple are played by Barbara Bradford and George Mann. Mann had a comedy act, Barto and Mann, with Dewey Barto. Barto was the father of Nancy Walker.

Was that a professional film? Or amateur? The reason I ask is because one can see all of the splices as if they've been done by hand on a splicing machine with glue etc. A bit like an old 8mm cine film from someone's home collection. Plus there is no talking. It is silent (apart from the music).

Is it possible Bud Abbott was somewhere nearby?

Just what we needed for Christmas: a shirtless Larry Fine.

It's ironic this obvious "home movie" shows up at a time of sexual harassment scandals in our country.

Looks like old Kodachrome 16mm footage.

George K. Mann was the taller partner of the comedy dance team Barto & Mann.
One of his hobbies was taking home movies.
In this film from 1928 we see a very fit and trim, and without that hideous moustache,
W.C. Fields at his rented home in Long Island when he was appearing in one of Earl Carroll's shows.

Here is W.C. performing the "Dentist Sketch" in the show.
Which he would later film as "The Dentist."

The look on Fields' face when he flubs his first attempt at the tennis racket gag is priceless, thanks for posting that!

This multinational production was mostly filmed in Hungary and is filled with Euro actors, many of whom seem to be speaking phonetically. Story concerns the clash/romance of an American opera diva (Glenn Close) and a Hungarian conductor (Niels Arestrup) as they try to mount a production of Tannhäuser in Paris. The film is filled with Euro politics past and present as the various artistes from around Europe parade their opinions and prejudices. Arestrup has to deal with oversized egos as well as unions, money problems, and jealousies. These people are still carping about Wagner's place in the pantheon Nazi Germany! Watchable for Close, who is dubbed by no less than Kiri Te Kanawa. The music, when they finally get to it, is wonderful.

And then the Three Stooges come in and louse everything up? :P

Near the end, as the cop is taking The Stooges away, watch quickly for Larry's wife Mabel and son Johnny at the right side of the scene.
