Amazon has the FORD AT FOX - THE COLLECTION box set on sale for 46 percent off, $158.99.
Mostly talkies, includes silents also.

There are complaints about the manufacturer's packaging in the customer reviews,
so you might want to take a look at those first.

I started this on the Silents Deal thread but it really belongs here. Amazon is having what might be called a "single digit" sale on some top classic dvds in the $5.99 - $6.99 range. Here are some titles I cherrypicked:

GUNGA DIN 6.49
CAPT. BLOOD 6.49
CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE 5.99
Dr. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, both 1931 & 1941 versions, 6.98
KING KONG 5.21
THE GREAT ZIEGFELD 6.49
TRAIL OF THE LONESOME (in gorgeous Technicolor!) 5.69
and
BING CROSBY COLLECTION: Five Films DOUBLE OR NOTHING, WAIKIKI WEDDING, EAST SIDE OF HEAVEN, IF I HAD MY WAY, HERE COME THE WAVES - 5.69(!)
and
CB DeMILLE BOX SET 5 Films: FOUR FRIGHTENED PEOPLE, CRUSADES, SIGN OF THE CROSS, CLEOPATRA, UNION PACIFIC 17.99 (from 59.99)

You may want to move fast because Amazon changes these prices w/o notice. Yesterday I bought the Laurel & Hardy set with FRA DIAVALO and BONNIE SCOTLAND for $10.99 and today it's $14.99. Go figure.

Sale Prices

PostSat Jun 11, 2011 1:30 am

Jump $10.99 to $14.99?? That's nothing. I ordered a Blu Ray John Wayne for $10.99 and then went away for a few hours and I had to buy it for $19.99. With a group of ups and downs on the order I was doing I ended up paying about $9 more. But you have to be quick. Some on Amazon are marked deal of the day.

From an International point of view some of these very cheaps or otherwise unavailable items are Marketplace Sellers items and although some say International they don't always ship to your country. As an International customer of Amazon sometimes a message actually appears on the title page before I get to the sellers to check their deals. I think sometimes Amazon's charge for Market Sellers to International($12.29) might not be enough to cover the actual delivery costs. I did get caught recently when I went to the seller direct but PayPal got my money back when the seller did not reply when the item(VHS set) was overdue.

I did see a complete set of The Hulk series someone wanted for $32 and the seller wanted $32 for postage and I queried because it was not being shipped by Standard Shipping but Expedited shipping which I never use. They replied thru Amazon e-mail that USPS charges this because it was over 4lbs but can cancel if I wanted. I said go ahead. They quickly replied that they cancelled the order because they thought I was in Canada & not Australia. So I found another and it was $42 and they only charged $12.29 delivery so I was better off and it is on the way. The first guy congratulated me and said he hoped it turned out OK for me!!!

All this can be very frustrating and I have guys tearing their hair out(and mine) because they can't get what they want. We can't all live in USA but I did once before the digital era.

I'll go you one better -- I just bought that last week at Big Lots sealed for $5. Lots of classics that sneak in there. I recently found that, Camille with Garbo, the Brando Universal set, the Mae West collection, Marlene Dietrich set, two DVDs of early 30s John Wayne Warners, all for either $3 or $5 each.

Oldies.com is offering a close-out on Warners Home Video's big box set, THE HUMPHREY BOGART ESSENTIAL COLLECTION. Twelve dvds with 24 Bogie flicks (both sides) and a 13th disc with the documentary THE BROTHERS WARNER, plus those great WHV bonus features and commentary with each film. This set was issued last year at $99 but Oldies is giving 50% off at $49.99. Oldies also sells it through Amazon Market plus $2.98 shipping. If you're a Bogie fan you may already have most of the titles but if you're missing even a few this is a deal.

The Essential Collection includes the following films:

The Petrified Forest (1936)
Black Legion (1937)
Marked Woman (1937)
Kid Galahad (1937)
The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse (1938)
Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
Dark Victory (1937)
The Roaring Twenties (1939)
Invisible Stripes (1939)
Virginia City (1940)
Brother Orchid (1940)
They Drive by Night (1940)
High Sierra (1941)
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
All Through the Night (1941)
Across the Pacific (1942)

Amazon seems to be having a post-Halloween horror film sale. Most are the standard discount but one deal caught my eye: THE BORIS KARLOFF COLLECTION containing THE NIGHT KEY (1937), THE TOWER OF LONDON (1939), the Technicolor THE CLIMAX (1944), and two from the early 50s, THE BLACK CASTLE and THE STRANGE DOOR. The real prize of course is THE CLIMAX, with NIGHT KEY and TOWER OF LONDON (a version of RICHARD III w/o Shakespeare) as nice bonuses.

The sale price is $10.19, down from $29.98:

I always try to set some extra money aside this time of year for the holiday DVD sales. I've availed myself of the recent Deep Discount sale and the Barnes and Noble Criterion 50% off sale. I've got my eyes on some Warner Archives stuff, too, but instead of the current 25% off sale, I'm hoping for a 5 for $50 sale (again, 50% off). I can't remember, does the Archive run this sale at Christmas time?
I'm hoping the most recent Keaton blu-ray, "Go West/Battling Butler" will get the half price treatment as well. "Seven Chances", too, but that's not likely for a new release. And lastly, the Laurel & Hardy Essential set. Let's be sure to keep each other apprised of upcoming sales.

This was noted on the Silents deal thread, but since they're talkies: J&R has Laurel & Hardy Essential Collection at 64% off. Won't find a better price point than this. http://www.jr.com/product/movie/pv/_1254731V/

I bought the L&H set from J&R too. But I was later told by email it was sold out! They are re-ordering, so I hope I get mine before Christmas. Who says there is no audience for this kind of film?

Another fine mess...
