Moving Servers

PostMon Dec 12, 2011 12:49 pm

We're moving servers, so we're up and down today, and when I finally switch the directional thingys to the new servers, you may lose the site for some hours until your ISP catches up with the news.

Watch the Nitrateville Facebook page for more info.

Ah, so that's why the server kept asking me this morning if I wanted to download unrecognizable files from the site, and refused to allow me to do so when I answered "Yes."

I had the same problen. When I opened the site on the browser I was getting strange files downloaded. I thought it was a virus attack.

Yeah, that was a new one on me, we've changed servers once or twice before without that happening. I emailed them to ask about it but by the time they got back to me 10 minutes later, they said the site should be up anyway. Just delete them if you got them.

I didn't notice any problem with downloading unrecognizable files, but I did have a day's worth of viewing history and at least one or two of my Monday night posts suddenly disappear sometime between Monday late night and Tuesday late morning. Weird.

I had two copies of the weird "index" files, I think they were called. Then I had a warning message for over 3 hours yesterday (site not paid for or whatnot). I read the info that message had about clearing the DNS cache on various systems, but did not do it.

But later in the night the warning message came back, just when I was going to post something. So, I read up on how to clear the DNS cache and tried several of them until I found one that apparently worked.

Things have been fine since.

I hate that not paid notice! It is NOT TRUE! We're actually paid up till this time next year (since our anniversary is Saturday).

You'd think we could just switch servers like that in this modern age, but the problem is that the info goes to some central place, and then different service providers retrieve it on their own schedules, so it's entirely up to who you have your internet from as to how fast they clue in to the fact that we have a new location on the intertubes.
