Dept. of Self-Congratulation

PostMon Sep 22, 2008 9:50 am

I imagine I am not the only one here who has other interests in life, and so since I have a current project that is available on the web, I thought I would point it out, and those who are interested may be interested by it, and those who aren't, needn't be.

I've been doing a bit of professional food-writing-- I guess it's professional if you get paid, no matter how little-- and also dabbling in videomaking for a bit, so now I've started doing a video podcast about food, mostly but not exclusively related to Chicago. Each one is about a 10-20 minute documentary about one topic, designed to give people the chance to really talk about that subject, not be cut down to soundbites and "Whoa, that's tasty!" like so much food TV.

Anyway, it's called Sky Full of Bacon, and the easiest way to see one is to go here:

[vimeo]http://www.vimeo.com/album/19289[/vimeo]

If you really like them, I suggest going to the iTunes store and subscribing there, that's the easy way to make sure you get every one (roughly monthly, at least for now)

Ditto for Cinesation! :)

As long as we are tooting our own horns today, I'll add a note that I've just updated my own photography website a couple of hours ago. It has nothing to do with Nitrateville or films, but a number of you wrote to express interest some time ago, so you may want to take a look at the new image selection:

I think that lunch may extend to Cinefest as well. If it wasn't for the screenings postings alt.movies.silent would be dead. Am I a bad person if I cancel my Google Groups subscription?

Oh man, now I'm on the hook for finding food in Massillon. Well, there's hamburgers... and hamburgers... and steak!

Even though I live right here in Ohio, less than thirty minutes away from Massillon, I'm never in Massillon except for Cinesation. Having said that, are there any decent Italian restaurants on Lincoln Way? Something reasonably close to the theatre? We went to Smiley's a couple of times. I have to admit we weren't very taken with the food at Smiley's. They are an award-winning restaurant though, so lots of folks do like them. And I kept hearing everyone rave about them several Cinesations ago. We went there twice, but just didn't get it.

A co-worker of mine who lives near Massillon was telling me that Top Of The Viaduct was a good place to eat in downtown Massillon with reasonable prices. Apparently they do a great breakfast. We'll probably try that one at least once over the weekend. We're not big breakfast eaters, so we usually have whatever the Hampton offers. Anyone gone to this restaurant and care to comment? I did see one review online which gave it a very good rating.

Smiley's is all right for very 1950s-60s Italian-American. A few of us found a slightly more upscale supper clubish Italian place further up the street that was decent too. Nothing hyperauthentic in either case, but pleasant enough.

Kozmo's seems to be the best of the burger places, better than Rockne's. The surprise is that there's really no smalltown breakfast place beyond Bob Evans, although I did find a nice little coffeehouse in that same direction. Greg Martin and I stumbled into Sunday breakfast at the Elks Club, which was fine if your idea of Sunday breakfast includes a highball, a cigarette and CNN. The other real lack is a sandwich place, since the closing of the cafe in the museum two years ago. Menches Bros. is supposed to be good for breakfast, but lunch was airport-worthy.

Here's a list that includes a few not mentioned yet:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ma ... illon+rest

Rockne's is OK for subs (did they have burgers too? I don't remember that), and there is also a Quizno's that isn't listed in the link.

Is Kozmo's pretty easily attainable for a walker? It says it's across from the Hampton, but how far across. I don't remember if I've ever noticed it in year's past. Is it on one of those side streets off of Lincoln Way? I just saw their website and it looks like something to try this year. Actually looking at the picture on the site, I think I can see where it is.

We're definitely looking for some new restaurants this year. Bob Evans is a nice place, but it does wear thin when you have dinner there three nights in a row.

Y'all could get a room in one of the residence-type hotels and make Mike cook for you.

Maybe we should have a separate thread or little section for Shameless Self Promotion?

Well, that's what this started out being... have at it, anybody!

Yeah, Kozmo's is on one side of the Hampton, off Lincoln Way. It used to be something else (Coppersomething? Coopersomething?) but brilliantly renamed itself for the character on Seinfeld-- right before the actor got himself in hot water.

Kozmo's was the Copper Rivet or the Copper Kettel..?
It's across the street from the hotel, on the west side.
They have a great flat-iron steak and very cold beer

Thanks Mike for being the troop leader!

Speaking of self-congratulation...

two of my videos, together with some newspaper stories about the same subject, were entered by the Chicago Reader in the James Beard awards, the big awards in the food world, and have been nominated for a multimedia journalism award. You'd never know I had anything to do with it by the bare list the Beard Foundation posted, but I'm on the entry form, anyway.

More here.

It happened again... my food videos and the accompanying pieces in the Chicago Reader have been nominated for a James Beard Memorial Foundation Award. (Go to very last paragraph.) More here.

And the nominations keep rolling in. Of course, sooner or later they roll out when someone else wins, too, but for the next nine days, I'm both a Beard Awards nominee and...

Image

I'm nominated in the video category, and I'd very much appreciate any NitrateVillains who feel inclined to go register and vote for me.

So, well, gee, I'm not a former Beard Award nominee after all...
