Online Newspaper Archives

PostThu Dec 28, 2017 7:48 am

Not sure where to post this, so it's here. For those of you with experience with any of the online newspaper archives, what are the pluses and minuses of each? I'm thinking of Newspaperarchive.com and Newspapers.com, but perhaps there's another source (aside from the Library of Congress' Chronicling America) that I'm not aware of. I had a subscription to Newspaperarchive.com for several years 8-10 years or so ago, and had some "issues" with it, but I have no idea whether or not their site is as good as it gets. Any feedback?

I hope this posts, this is my third try and nothing has gone up. They all have issues, some bringing things up randomly, some bringing up phrases close to what you're looking for or with just a word out of the phrase, etc. Access Newspaper Archives, carried by many public libraries, is just as good for me as Newspapers.com. Chronicling America and Fulton HIstory are good for early 1900s. Fulton History can be searched by individual paper by going to page 2, Old Photos and Documents. There's also California Digital Newspaper Archive if you're searching for something in California. While it's mostly small newspapers, it does have larger papers in the early 1900s.

You may consider my use or newspaper archives as a special case.
For genealogy research I use https://www.genealogybank.com because it has the "big" newspapers for Springfield, Illinois, where many of my ancestors lived. So I have an ongoing subscription there.

I wish there was one newspaper archive that included all the cities I desire, but there doesn't appear to be one.
So which one is best for you might depend upon whether you need local stories in particular cities or mostly national stories.

Here are some links to other archives:

https://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc California Digital Newspaper Collection
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov Library of Congress
http://www.fultonhistory.com Fulton History, mostly New York state
https://news.google.com/newspapers?hl=en Google

Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection (includes Vaudeville News and New York Clipper)
http://nyshistoricnewspapers.org New York State Historic Newspapers
https://oregonnews.uoregon.edu Historic Oregon Newspapers

and finally, Cyndislist of newspapers:

Not sure if that's the latest aggregation.

I know Miss Brooksie psoted a link to an Australian online newspaper not long ago but darned if I can find it.

You might be thinking of Everyones, the Australian showbusiness bible that has recently been digitised in full by the National Library of Australia. It's accessible via Trove, but is stored in a different part of the website, called 'Journals, Articles and Data Sets' - https://trove.nla.gov.au/article?q=.
