Greetings from Brooksie

PostMon Jul 05, 2010 2:00 am

Greetings from Australia. I see there is at least one other Antipodean on this board - please put up your hand if you are one too.

I have been collecting silent film memorabilia for over a decade, after losing my heart to the silents while a university film student (a family tradition, I have since discovered - and I have my great-grandmother's diary of 1914 to prove it) and finding a book of silent era cigarette cards at a local antique store for $4.

My collection has since grown to some 350 items, and now spans vaudeville, pre 1935 theatre and early talkies as well as the silents. In the past six months I've begun blogging it (see http://brooksiescollection.tumblr.com/archive, or enter the site through the front door at http://brooksiescollection.tumblr.com) - an ongoing project which not only helps me archive and research everything but (heaven forbid) encourages me to buy more. Ce la vie!

Looking forward to discussing silents with all and sundry.

Yours, with a Photoplay dangling from one hand,

Welcome Brooksie. You have a nice collection. I especially like your Elsie Janis photo from The Pagan and the Playgoer magazine with Theda Bara. You should scan some of your items (rather than photograph them) so that they appear clearer, like the Janis photo.

We have quite a few memorabilia collectors here, and it is possible to post photos on discussion threads. My memorabilia collection website is http://www.silentfilmstillarchive.com.

Thank you. I'm working on getting both a scanner and a better camera (not living in a dark old house with poor ambient light would also help ...)

moviepas is from Melbourne & has been for over 61 years. A retired retailer and wholesaler of books, records, films etc etc. Also done lots of transfers of old tapes to different formats and repaired some damaged DVDs for people who can't replace them anymore(not always possible though). Collect lots of films on DVD & Blu Ray whilst funds allow. Lost a lot of archives due to a deliberately lit fire in my shop in May 1997 & much irreplaceable & unique.
