Can not add avatar

PostSun Nov 07, 2010 5:08 am

Hello, I am new here. I can not add an avatar. It is less than 80x80 and less than 6KB.

Here's the error:

It's persnickety sometimes. Email it to me at mikegebert at gmail dot com and I'll see if I can do it.

The avatar function in this version of PhpBB seems to be screwy. For some reason, there are certain people and certain images it just won't take. Multiple people have tried with no luck. I will try to see if there's some insight into this on PhpBB boards, but if you have an avatar and it's working, I'd say... don't mess with it!

I've never had an avatar here, so I tried; no luck. I wonder if it has anything to do with the exceptionally small file size that's allowed? 6kb was difficult for me to achieve, even after shrinking mine to 40x40 pixels and using the lowest quality compression. Additionally, my hard drive seems to have a minimum sector size of 8kb, so it's difficult to judge exactly what the real size is. Do you have control over that setting?

UPDATE: Well, I managed to create one that reported its size as 4Kb, and that didn't take either. Not a big deal to me personally, just curious.

I can't get my avatar to take and it's the same one I've used here for at least a year.

Yes, I know, Danny and I both tried it with the same one, and tried changing the file type and so on to see if there was some issue, with no luck.

This is "reassuring" since I thought it was only me who couldn't post an avatar. Hope it can work someday.

Has this been resolved?

I'm trying to load an avatar with no luck.

I also wonder why this hasn't been resolved. If we are creating reasonably sized avatars that fit the criteria of this forum why aren't they allowed to appear?

It may seem very minor to members on here that already have avatars but with newcomers it can make this message board seem very elitist.

frankly, if the banners on top of this forum can change monthly why not a fix on the avatars? just an honest question

Mike would know more than I do, but there's apparently a quirk or bug in the software that isn't allowing avatar uploads to work. All of us have tried uploading on behalf of members, with no better results. My guess is that it will take a fix in the software before anything changes.

Well, you could solve the seeming too plebeian problem by naming yourself for a bank...

This will get fixed when I find a programmer and pay them a bunch of money to create a PhpBB 3 version of this board, at which time you'll get to complain about a bunch of things that don't work or look like they used to. Since this seems to work pretty well, minor annoyances aside, and since I've been busy like a madman of late in general, I just haven't pursued that big fix for something that seems not very broken.

I agree Mike, this not a big deal. I decided to change my avatar and that's how I found out that it wasn't working. So while I don't have an avatar now, at least people won't think that I look like a dog.

Yep same problem here. Isn't it just the rights on your images/avatar directory?
The web user probably doesn't have the write privilege.

Anyway is there some sort of defaults that you can set mine too. It's driving me crazy not having a Avatar.

Ultimately its not that big a deal so don't put yourself out.

And a very handsome one at that. You might want to cut back on the Red Bull a bit, though.

Boy, it sure seems like we have a lot of avatars that don't work still.

If you tried uploading one, and it didn't work, send it to me along with your screen name to mikegebert at gmail dot com.

My guess is file size is too big, and I can easily fix that, but I want to see what exactly is causing this.
